Book Spotlight: Guardian Angels by Andrew Weston

In a series of terrifying events, otherworldly beings intervene to save innocent lives. The world community reacts with relief as they realize that angels may in fact exist, and they are diligently protecting us.

But there are those who would seek to stop what they feel is a threat against their livelihoods. How far will some go to battle the Guardians? Is the fairy tale over before it even begins?

Guardian Angels is a powerful and compelling story about the catalyst that has the power to unite society in the hope for a better future. The spark of hope is fragile—can it last?

Excerpt:

Making his way across the muddy fields behind the house of the Drake residence, David Collins had to smile to himself in satisfaction.

Sure enough, while the family had beefed up security at the front of their home, he had been correct in his assumption that they wouldn’t bother much with the back.

The low wire mesh fencing separated the home from miles of open farmland bordered by statutory brambles, thorns, and thistles.

They obviously didn’t think anyone would try to get through. And they were right—who in their right mind would traipse through this muck?

David amused himself with the fact that he probably wasn’t in his right mind. The people he represented were not just anyone.

That’s why he couldn’t afford to mess about any longer. They would want results, and he was here to get them. Heavily shielded, a taser tucked snugly in one pocket and a dart gun in the other, he was determined to come away with answers.

No more Mr. Nice Guy, he thought.

Coming at last to the back fence, he looked around to ensure no one was in a position to see it bend under his weight.

He climbed over. A dirty plastic swing and a deflated plastic paddling pool in the back yard confirmed he was in the right place.

Other toys were littered around the poorly kept garden—a bike, a ball, some cars along with a few “Action Man” figures, all scattered and abandoned along the concrete path. The back door was conveniently ajar.

Perfect!

Removing both the dart gun and the taser from his pockets, he started along the path, quickening his pace as he drew nearer.

Burst in, stun them, read them and then out through the front door with my face covered until I’m out of camera shot, then I’m away, he thought.

A rear window was also open, and he could hear the mother shouting to the boy inside to shut up, as she was trying to listen to the BBC Broadcast. He thought he heard something about her wanting to hear what the Guardian was saying.

He was surprised. Oh, they turned up then?

However, that wasn’t as surprising as what happened next.

He was about three yards from the door when he suddenly heard a thrumming sound and found a glowing, golden blade of light held about two inches from his throat.

He froze, looking along and over the long blade at the startling woman who held it there, her magnetic grey eyes boring into his soul, a look of warning flashing in their depths.

At six feet tall, and with a physique that looked as if a goddess had somehow been poured into her black uniform and molded into liquid marble, David knew instantly who had figured him out. Shit!

He felt an invisible pressure hold him still.

A voice in his mind spoke. Hello, David, my name is Victoria. Do I have your attention?

His eyes darted about, flicking from the blade to her, then to the house before returning to the blade again.

The same voice spoke again. Don’t worry about the people in the house. They’re blissfully unaware of our presence and we’re nice and safe within your chameleon shield. I asked you a question, David. Do I have your attention?

“Err, yes!” he replied, too shocked to utter a full sentence.

He looked more closely into the face of his adversary. Her dark flowing hair was tied back, cascading over one of her shoulders. Strong features highlighted just how beautiful she was. But those intensely grey eyes terrified him; they burned with a barely restrained power that caused his teeth to ache.

Taking a deep breath, David repeated more fully, “You have my full and undivided attention, yes.”

He relaxed as the Guardian sheathed her plasma baton, and David found he could move again.

We believe you may represent a group of people who have made several uninvited approaches to our members recently in the vain attempt to offer positions of employment to them.

While every member of the Guardians is free to do as they wish, you should be aware that we are very loyal to the cause we serve, and none of us appreciate your attempts. While we don’t know your reasons, we feel they must be of a somewhat darker disposition than we would prefer. Otherwise, you would have openly made contact with us.

Make sure you tell those you serve that they would be foolish to confuse our restraint with weakness. Just because we choose to act with patience does not mean our patience is limitless, understood?

“Yes, I understand.”

I hope you do, because we do not expect to have to bump into you, or your people again under these circumstances. Understood?

“Yes.”

Oh, David, not to labor the point, but that includes circumstances like this one, yes?

“Yes, I understand clearly. I’ll make sure that’s passed along.”

Tell those you serve that this boy is protected. He is not only important to us, but to the whole world. If your people make another ill-advised attempt to gain access to him, not only will they regret it, but those making the attempt will never be in a position to harm anyone ever again. Am I making myself crystal clear?

“Yes, Ma’am.”

Also, while I am fully capable of mind-reaming you where you stand and leaving your skull empty of information or coherence, I won’t. Instead I will extend to you and your people something you have failed to extend to us, simple courtesy.

It is clear you are all gifted in some way. The world needs people like you, now more than ever. Seriously think about the path you are on, because if you don’t, you will all face the consequences. Is that clear?

“Yes, very clear.”

And with that, David experienced a moment’s disorientation and found himself standing on the sidewalk next to his hired car more than a mile away.

Needless to say, he was on his phone and updating his superior within seconds, very glad to be away from that compelling woman who was so terrifyingly beautiful.

Stupid curse!

Yves Sucat was a Crusader trapped in a canine body…until a beautiful twenty-first century dog groomer offered the missing link to break his spell. But Regina Patterson was no fluffy-headed female who would instantly melt at Yves' silvery seduction. The more time he spent with the tender-hearted blonde, the less he was able to keep his paws—hands!—off of her.

Regina was much more comfortable with dogs than men, and the stunningly handsome – stunningly male – knight who now shared her apartment was no exception. She’d hoped to find a man as loyal as the pooches she pampered day after day, but would Yves’s broken curse end with her own broken heart?

Author Interview:James Garcia Jr. author of Seeing Ghosts

Hi James! Thank you for stopping by Paranormal Romance Fans for Life today. We are so happy to have you here along with your book, Seeing Ghosts. This book sounds great! Let's get started, shall we?

Now, where are you from and from where/who did your love for writing come from?

A) I’m from the California Central Valley, near Fresno. When one reads my books they find about it because I set my vampire series there, and Seeing Ghosts starts there before moving off to the California central coast. I thought I was going to be an artist when I was a kid. I used to draw all the time; however, I discovered horror novels in my teens and I never looked back. It wasn’t very long at all before I began crafting my own stories.

Can you say that your journey to publication was difficult? If so, what were the hardest moments to get through?

A) Perhaps immaturity was the hardest part. I finished some novellas and short stories, and the beginning of my first novel; however, once career and family began to become a priority, I set things aside. I tried unsuccessfully to jumpstart my writing over the years, but it wasn’t until I turned thirty-eight that I really began to feel the regret that I was facing. I dusted off the manuscript, saw it finished and founded a small publisher to step out on a limb with me. Ultimately my first novel took twenty years.

Wow! Twenty years, that is incredible. I know during those long years (and the years since publication) that you must have faced some struggles.  So, when it comes to your writing, how do you overcome i-suck-it is, that little voice in your head that tells you your writing isn’t good enough?

A) You know, I don’t think I’ve really thought I wasn’t good enough at any time, at least not these past six years or so that I have been writing again. The problem as I see it is the competition is simply so huge that it often feels as if I’m beating my head against that proverbial brick wall and no one even notices I’m there doing it. That’s the tough part. The frequent feeling of wanting to quit has nothing at all to do with whatever level of talent my writing might sit at. It’s really more to do with the size of the mountain to be climbed. Add to that my eleven hour day job, and the work gets harder still. Yet, I keep moving forward, just looking for that break that will propel me.

On a more positive note, what is your dream vacation?

A) My wife and I have been talking about Italy and France for a long time (I love Francophiles!). That would certainly qualify. A couple of years ago we were fortunate enough to travel to New York City to accompany my son and his high school Wind Ensemble as they were invited to play at Carnegie Hall. It was a glorious five days that still feel like a dream sometimes.

Describe your writing style in five words.

Dark, twisty, humorous, romantic, suspenseful.

What movies are you currently excited to see?

A) Well, now that the teens are older they don’t need dad to take them to the movies anymore. They see all the blockbusters well before I do. *sigh* ;) My wife and I just saw Before Midnight which was the third film in that series for those familiar with the Before Sunrise and Before Sunset Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy films. I’m rooting for the newest Wolverine film since the last one was rather iffy. Other than that, I’m just looking for any excuse to take my wife out to the movies. She’ll do some action film, but mostly we hope for a good RomCom to see.

What are you currently reading?

A) I’m between books at the moment. I just finished Linda Cassidy Lewis’ romance drama, An Illusion of Trust; Stant Litore’s zombie bible book, Strangers in the Land; Richard J. Parker’s serial murder novel, Scare Me; Dan Brown’s latest, Inferno; Stephen King’s son, Joe Hill’s Horns. All were very good. Once I get through this book tour I’ll start reading again.

If you weren’t a writer, what other careers would you pursue?

A) Well, as I mentioned earlier I already have a day job. If the writing thing doesn’t get far enough, I suppose I’ll just have to figure out how I’m going to satisfy myself with finishing out the next twenty years or so until retirement. *weeps* Just kidding! ;)

If you could create a holiday of your own, what would it be called?

A) Chicago Cubs World Series Champions Day… *laughs* I’m sorry. My poor baseball team hasn’t won a world series since the Titanic was only a series of blueprints! We’re talking 1908 for those unfamiliar with our plight. It would mean we finally won the thing.

For people who haven’t read your novel, how would you summarize the plot?

A) A man who is struggling to live without his dead wife and unborn son moves into a spooky old ranch house and finds himself haunted by more ghosts than just the ones that haunt his memory. As if that weren’t enough, he then meets a woman who is the spitting image of that dead wife and it’s almost more than he can bear.

What are two of your pet-peeves?

A) 1)When I can’t find my keys because a family member left them somewhere else instead of putting them back in my hand or the drawer where I leave my wallet, sunglasses, etc. *sigh* 2) Before I recently had my work hours changed, I used to work from 4 am until 3 pm. When I would come home from work during the summer or a holiday break and find the rest of my family lounging around in sleep ware that would really bug me!

To you, what makes a good story?

A) Hmm? I don’t know. Don’t try to impress me with your vocabulary or mastery of science. Just get out of the way and let your story take me somewhere. That’s why we read, am I right? To be transported away.

What usually turns you off about a story?

A) A lot of us are Indies these days, trying to make it all on our own. Unfortunately, some are in too much of a hurry to get their work out there and cut corners with editing, proofing, etc. I know because I was guilty of that myself. I didn’t realize I was doing that, but I was. It’s hard work and often expensive, but we need to put in the full professional effort or we do ourselves a great disservice. Books that have not little errors, but grievous ones are a huge turn off.

If you could collaborate with any author, who would you choose, and why?

A) Probably a fellow Indie author. I love this community of writers, and collaborating with another sounds life great fun and something that would be very rewarding.

What is on your night stand?

A) Canadian Whiskey! *laughs* Not really. The night stand is on my wife’s side of the bed. My kindle is usually nearby on the dresser, if that’s what you’re asking.

What is your favorite book?

As you brace yourself to hear about some God-awful horror novel, I have a shocker for you. My favorite novel is nothing of the sort. It’s Beach Music by Pat Conroy. I never wanted to read it, but succumbed to some peer pressure from a family member. I’ve never stopped reading it! It may very well be the most perfect book. Life-like characters, incredible interwoven plotlines and superb dialogue that wrap up at the end as if tied with a beautiful red bow – it’s a superb read!

My thanks to the Paranormal Romance Fans for Life audience and Danica Winters for allowing me this great opportunity to share a little bit about me and what I do.

James, you are very welcome. Thank you for joining us!

Christmas in July Blog Hop

BWS tips buttonAlright, it is finally that time for Christmas in July!! We are so excited...

Bring on the gifts!

As a special gift to our regular readers I'm excited to announce that Danica Winters has kindly agreed to give us a sneak peek of her upcoming release,

Christmas Wishes (to be released August, 2013).
Chapter One
A solitary snowflake landed on the pine bough wreath in Lee Llewellyn’s hands.  Its lacy white edges curled around the warm boughs like melting fingers, dripping down the pin-point needles and falling unceremoniously to the frozen grass of the cemetery.

The grass crunched under her feet as she made her way to the familiar marble headstone with the bird scribed into the inky black stone.  At the base were last week’s roses, their head’s drooping in icy lamentation.  The aged, brittle roses reminded her of the way she always seemed to feel—frozen in time, just waiting for someone to pluck her from her stupor, only to be replaced by newer, fresher beauty.
Today the flowers would stay. Lee couldn’t bring herself to destroy their despondent beauty.  They could stay one more week. Daniel wouldn’t mind. Or at least, she hoped his spirit wouldn’t.  In truth, he’d never been one for flowers anyway.  If anything the flowers were more for her, just as the wreath in her hands.  Curling the velvety red ribbon so it sat perfectly at the center, she sat the circular wreath next to the roses, careful to leave her son’s name legible.
She read the each word as she had a thousand times before. Daniel Edward Llewellyn.  Born May 10th, 1983. Died December 23, 2010.
The tear trickled down Lee’s cheek, unchecked by time or self-control. She couldn’t imagine a time when the deep pain of those words would leave her unaffected.  Yes, they were only words, little letters etched into stone, but they signified so much pain. So many memories. They were everything, just as Daniel had once been…and still was.
A car roared to a stop behind her on the drive.  Turning slightly from the grave, she glanced back in time to see a man in a well-worn ranch jacket get out of an oversized truck.  Stepping out, he caught her gaze and gave her an acknowledging dip of the head.  Reaching back in the truck, he pulled out a  cowboy hat and slipped it over his slightly too long locks.
Though she didn’t recognize the brunette man with his stubble-ridden cheeks, flickers of annoyance filled her.  He had no right to interfere with her grief.  He had no right to disturb her time with Daniel... (continued)
