The Happily Ever After By Resurrecting Harry Author Constance Phillips

There’s something to be said about a happy ending, isn’t there? It’s one of the reasons I love to pick up a romance over other genres to read. It is also the main reason I write romance. Taking two characters, putting them on a bumpy road to travel, and then watching them learn how to stand on their own two feet, while realizing they can’t live without each other, makes me all warm and mushy inside.

In part, it was why I was drawn to write Resurrecting Harry. To quote that old TV show Quantum Leap: [I wanted] to set right what once went wrong...”

Harry Houdini, even many years after his death, remains the best known escape artist. His wife Bess was his partner on the stage and in life. He died before his time and she continued on, dedicated to both him and the act. Admirable, yes, but it’s not the happy ending we long for. In the romance novel version of their life, things would have ended much differently.

So with a little help from Jaden – purgatory’s keeper – Harry gets a new body, life and face and is charged with using it to save Bess from herself.

I’ll admit I was a little nervous about taking two real life characters and playing with their destiny. The angst was increased proportionally by the level of Bess and Harry’s success in their life. It was then that I realized the book had to be about more than who these people were. It had to be a universal story.  Yes, it was happening to them, but it could be happening to anybody.

And isn’t that what’s most wonderful about a story that ends well. When we read them – even if they are the most unlikely circumstances, even if they contain creatures from other worlds that only live in our imaginations – we can picture ourselves in those final embraces. We like to feel our hearts melt a little. We want to believe that we can all be the stars of our own happily ever after.

  1. A happy ending definitely makes me feel happy but it's also the journey I really want to know about. I want to see how they grow and if they are happy in the end that makes it even better.
