Chapter One

A solitary snowflake landed on the pine bough wreath in Lee Llewellyn’s hands.  Its lacy white edges curled around the warm boughs like melting fingers, dripping down the pin-point needles and falling unceremoniously to the frozen grass of the cemetery. 

 

The grass crunched under her feet as she made her way to the familiar marble headstone with the bird scribed into the inky black stone.  At the base were last week’s roses, their head’s drooping in icy lamentation.  The aged, brittle roses reminded her of the way she always seemed to feel—frozen in time, just waiting for someone to pluck her from her stupor, only to be replaced by newer, fresher beauty. 

Today the flowers would stay. Lee couldn’t bring herself to destroy their despondent beauty.  They could stay one more week. Daniel wouldn’t mind. Or at least, she hoped his spirit wouldn’t.  In truth, he’d never been one for flowers anyway.  If anything the flowers were more for her, just as the wreath in her hands.  Curling the velvety red ribbon so it sat perfectly at the center, she sat the circular wreath next to the roses, careful to leave her son’s name legible. 

She read the each word as she had a thousand times before. Daniel Edward Llewellyn.  Born May 10^th, 1983. Died December 23, 2010. 

The tear trickled down Lee’s cheek, unchecked by time or self-control. She couldn’t imagine a time when the deep pain of those words would leave her unaffected.  Yes, they were only words, little letters etched into stone, but they signified so much pain. So many memories. They were everything, just as Daniel had once been…and still was.

A car roared to a stop behind her on the drive.  Turning slightly from the grave, she glanced back in time to see a man in a well-worn ranch jacket get out of an oversized truck.  Stepping out, he caught her gaze and gave her an acknowledging dip of the head.  Reaching back in the truck, he pulled out a  cowboy hat and slipped it over his slightly too long locks.

Though she didn’t recognize the brunette man with his stubble-ridden cheeks, flickers of annoyance filled her.  He had no right to interfere with her grief.  He had no right to disturb her time with Daniel... (continued)

Review:  4/5 stars. I'm picky with my 5/5, so this is good!

     I received a random tweet one day last week from this author asking for a review. She sent me the link to check it out on Amazon before agreeing and I almost said no just based on the title and cover. Don’t get me wrong, the cover looks great, but I thought it was just your plain, run-of-the-mill romance novel. I was wrong and I’m glad that I was wrong!
    
    I love mysteries. That’s not a surprise as I drool over Criminal Minds and obsess over the paranormal crimes on Grimm. I do enjoy romances on occasion, but I rarely ever pick just a regular romance novel. This isn’t just a regular romance novel, so I didn’t make an exception.
The novel starts the mystery out quickly and held on to my attention as I wanted to know who the next victim would be and what on earth was going on. Honestly, that would have been enough to keep me hooked, yet there was still the paranormal aspect. I’d never read a book about shapeshifting nymphs, but I found the concept interesting. The biggest obstacle is that nymphs can’t fall in love or the lover will face a tragic death. HELLO, relationship issues! Even THAT would have been enough to keep me hooked without having the mystery!

     I won’t spoil the story, but I will say that I highly recommend this to BOTH romance and paranormal fans, even if you don’t usually read paranormal romance. The “magic” is just enough to satisfy a paranormal fan without it being too much for someone who may not usually read paranormal. I’m glad that I opted to read this and am looking forward to more from the author. You can find Montana Mustangs on Kindle for $3.82 and it is well worth the price! The waves of the lake crashed next to Dane Burke like greedy reporters descending onto a crime scene. Dane picked up the severed hand, careful to touch it only with the tips of his gloved fingers, all in an attempt to save what little evidence remained.

The fingers were wrinkled and pale, the color of rotting fish. The skin of the palm flapped back, exposing the white lines of the tendons and the bloated pink muscles of the victim’s hand. He pushed back the skin, covering the hand’s viscera. The flesh was rubbed raw in several places, but whether it was from the time in the water or something else Dane couldn’t be sure.

Behind him, the secondary officer, Grant, talked with the woman who’d phoned in the find. The woman was blonde, thin, and uncomfortably beautiful.

“So, Aura, are you in Montana for business or pleasure?” Officer Grant asked, with just a little too much glee in his voice.

Dane tried to ignore the amateurish come-ons the officer threw at the blonde with the large blue eyes and plump lips that pulsed with the pink hues of life.

He turned the gruesome hand over in his. The fingernails of the victim were painted a vivid red, now brighter than the blood that had settled in the person’s flesh. He snickered quietly as he thought about the stark difference between the woman behind him who was the embodiment of life and the macabre sloughing object of death he stared upon.

Maybe the kid wasn’t so wrong for focusing on the woman. If he’d been just a few years younger, maybe he would have been acting that way too—focusing on the beauty of the woman instead of the gore of the job. A Paranormal Romance Author's Opinion on Macbeth

As Part of the Romance Madness Blog Hop, I wanted to kick it up a notch... And what is more Mad and centered on the Paranormal than Shakespeare's Macbeth?

Paranormal Literature has been alive and well for centuries, take for example, Shakespeare's Macbeth.  In the play, a trio of witches tells Macbeth that he will be king.  In effect, they set off a rollarcoaster of horrific murders and an bloody path to power. 
These three witches play an important role in perpetuating the hero in his role of becoming the antagonist.  (What an amazing thought--though I'm afraid romance readers would not enjoy a hero who becomes the villian--or would they?)
A simply question could be asked--Did the witches cause his descent into madness or was their prophecy only a foretelling of things to come into his life? 
In my humble opinion, I believe that they perpetuated the effects.  They set his murderous rampage into action.  He tells Lady Macbeth about the prophecy--in effect furthing the ego behind the witches words.  Freud actually likened Macbeth to the three aspects of personality: selfish instincts (his desire to become king), realistic thinking (the belief he must kill to fulfill prophecy), and moralistic conscious (the fact that he knows his actions are deplorable).  Yet, thanks to Lady Macbeth, he is spurned on to take continuing action because people, by nature, are suggestable--and, for him, pressure is coming from every angle--fate, marriage, internal choice and a fear of failure.

As an author of paranormal romance, I am of the school of thought that men are often predictable because of their desire to please, their drive for power, and their susceptability to public opinion. Yet, I like to hold out hope that the characters I write will not be like Macbeth--I write dark fiction, but the shadows I create are often killed by the light.
