I blew out the entrance and took off, hustling through the panicked crowd. Another gun fired and police sirens sounded in the distance. I made a left down a small street then a right into an alley, jumping a garbage can, hurtling over a short wall, and disappearing into the neighborhood.

“You get it?” he asked, swerving through a turn then dropping our speed so we didn’t draw attention.
I nodded. “Is Lady in Blue okay?”
Galen hugged another turn. “She will be. She came to when the gunshots were fired.”
I blew out a sigh of relief. It wasn't the first time a distraction job had taken a bad turn, but it was still a worry. “And the cops?”
“All at the nightclub. But we will have to lose the car.” He used his cell phone and dialed our contact, making arrangements for cleanup.
I pulled out Sahin’s wallet and lifted the keycard. “Payday,” I said, holding it up.
“Mommie Dearest says we should leave the wallet and card with the car.” Galen disconnected the call. “They will pick it all up at the Starbucks near the safe house in ten minutes.”
I drew in a breath and held it, forcing my heart and my lungs to calm down. Another close call. I loved this stuff.
“You love this stuff way too much,” Galen said, glancing my way.
I had known Galen all of three months, and he was far too good at reading my mind already. I was trying to get my head wrapped around the fact that we were connected in a way that didn't make sense, but that didn't mean I had to like it. Ignoring him, I sank into the seat, letting the adrenalin wear off.
“Let’s see what else we’ve got on this guy.” Inside his wallet I found a black American Express, a MasterCard, and over five thousand Euros in the billfold. A picture was tucked in with his identification. I pulled it out and held it up to catch the light from passing street lamps.

It was a photo of the love of my life kissing another man.

PRFL would like to extend a very warm welcome to Terri Herman-Poncé, author of Covet. Terri, to begin, can you tell us who or what most influenced you to become a writer?

My best friend influenced me the most. I started out writing Star Trek: The Next Generation fanfiction almost 18 years ago (wow, has time passed!) and that’s where I met her. She beta-read all my stuff (and still does) and one day encouraged me to spread my wings and write something of my own. I haven’t looked back since.

If you were to be left alone on an island, what three books would you take with you?
How to Build a Boat from Nothing
Wait. You want a serious answer? I’ll have to get back to you on that. J

What are your most and least favorite movie genres?
I love, love, LOVE anything suspense. The more it grabs me by the throat, the more I’m hooked. My least favorite? Well, I’d have to say I don’t really have a least favorite, though I’ll admit that I don’t understand any movies with British humor. It goes right over my head!

If you could choose any man for your next book cover, who would he be?
David Gandy. Hands down. Or, in my case, hands ALL OVER.

When you are on a deadline, what aspect of your ‘regular’ life suffers most?
Oh boy. Well, I’ve recently gotten rights back to all my books and I’m self-published. So any deadlines are self-inflicted. Which means my sanity suffers the most.

What advice would you give aspiring authors?
Write true to your heart. Write what you’re passionate about. Write what feels right for you.

When reading for pleasure, do you prefer a physical or electronic book?
I prefer physical books, but my bookshelf is now full so I’ve had to buy a Kindle. As much as I love the technology, I gotta say that I miss holding paper in my hands.

From the first stroke of a pen (or laptop), how long did it take you get published?
18 years. 18 long, long years before I found a publisher. Now if that’s not an example of stick-to-itiveness, I don’t know what is!

Did you ever feel like calling it quits?
Never! Can you believe it? I’m having so much fun creating my own worlds. Storytelling is my drug, and I’m hooked. I can’t imagine a day without it.

What did you do when you got your first contract?
I think I blinked at the laptop, thinking this can’t be right. Then my husband and I opened a bottle of red wine. And then I told him this can’t be right.

PRFL would like to extend a very warm welcome to Terri Herman-Poncé, author of In This Life. Terri, to begin, can you tell us where you're from, and where/whom did your love for writing come from?

I grew up in Queens, New York and hated reading and writing growing up. H-A-T-E-D it. I now live on Long Island and L-O-V-E it. Funny how life can turn around sometimes. For a long while I adored watching Star Trek: The Next Generation. In fact, I fell in love with one of the characters so bad that I started creating scenes in my head about him. I wanted to write him in my own way, and have him experience things that were special to me instead of what was special to the writers of the series. So, I started writing fan fiction and that’s where my love of writing originated. I guess, you’d say, I boldly went where I wanted to go.

Can you say that your journey to publication was difficult? If so, what were the hardest moments to get through?

I wouldn’t say it was difficult but long. I’ve had it in my head for a very long time that writing isn’t easy. Probably because, when I studied under Jennifer Crusie, she once said that if the writing feels easy you’re doing it wrong. But I’ve been writing for about 18 years and I didn’t get published until almost two years ago. I figure, at this rate, I’ve got about another 5 years to become an overnight success. ;-)

How do you overcome I-suck-at-this, that little voice in your head that tells you your writing isn’t good enough?
I get up and sucker punch that little voice as far away as possible. It’s a stupid voice anyway because it tries to undermine my passion for writing.

What is your dream vacation?
I’d love to visit Bali and Italy, but in all honesty my perfect place is anywhere there’s a beach and warm sand. Ummm, and a bottle of red wine. That’s probably why I love Long Island so much. Some of my favorite times are spent sitting by the shore, listening to the waves break and the seagulls sing while sipping on a wonderful Merlot.

Describe your writing style in five words.
Push it to the limits.

What movies are you currently excited to see?
Sigh. I haven’t been to a movie in a movie theater in a long time, but I’m itching to see Gone Girl when it comes out. I LOVED the book, and I’d like to see how they play it up on the big screen. That’s one book I wished I’d written myself!

What are you currently reading?
Ohhh, I just got into Mitch Albom’s The Time Keeper. Not sure what I think about the story yet, because I’ve only just started it. But I gotta say, Albom really has a unique way of telling a tale.

If you weren’t a writer, what other careers would you pursue?
Queen of the Universe. Seriously.

If you could create a holiday of your own, what would it be called?
Let’s Be Nice to Each Other Day. Because, in my mind, the world could use more nice.

What are two of your pet-peeves?
Please don’t leave your garbage on the train. It’s a train, not a trash can.
If you’re going to chew gum, please chew it with your mouth closed.

To you, what makes a good story?
Conflict. Tension. Forcing characters into increasingly difficult situations that test their nature. That’s reading and writing nirvana to me. If you make it easy for the characters, you’re going to deliver a yawn-worthy book.

What usually turns you off about a story?
Lack of conflict. Lack of tension. Characters given the easy route. I’ll usually give a book a page or two to grab me, which is why I rely on Amazon’s Look Inside feature. That’s the place where I make all my book buying decisions.

If you could collaborate with any author, who would you choose, and why?
Robert Crais. He’s my writing idol and an author who, in my opinion, really knows how to tell a story. So, uh, Robert? You out there? Call me…

What is on your night stand?
It ain’t a book, I can tell you that! My cell phone. Television remote. Lip balm. Lamp. And post-its for middle-of-the-night creative sparks!

What is your favorite book?
Anything by Robert Crais. You hear that Robert? Call me…

Me: So, tell everyone your name.

Sydney: My name is Sydney Gresham.

Me: Thank you for participating in this interview. Can you please tell the readers a little something about yourself?

Sydney: I’m a simple country girl of the small town of Madisonburg. Nothing ever happens in this town and I am sure that even on the eve of my seventeenth birthday, nothing is going to change. That is, until the visitor shows up.

Me: Tell me a little bit more about that experience?

Sydney: It started with this crazy dream I had one night. I remember being whisked away in the arms of a shadowy figure and he took me across stars and planets. When we returned to Earth, I tried to touch him and he disappeared. I woke up and could not shake the feeling that I would ether see him again or that I had met him before. The next day, this boy named William showed up at my grandmother’s door asking for help to get back home. Now, it’s getting a little weird because I have that same feeling like I did when I awakened from the dream. It’s like I’ve known him from some other life. We are definitely growing close the longer he stays here. I only hope that we can become something more before he returns home.

Me: Interesting. What do you love most about your character?

Sydney: I’m a love of the experience of being alive. It’s so boring here in Madisonburg. I’ve dreamed of a time when things would shake up a bit around here and since the ‘quake, they certainly have. I love hanging with my girls and sharing moments with Sarah on the couch, recollecting the times when my parents were alive.

Me: And what do you hate most?

Sydney: I can be a bit careless. My care free personality could be the end of me; at least that’s what Henry stresses. I’m probably a too trusting for my own good. But I just believe that you have to live for the here and now. I don’t want to waste time wondering what I could have done. I’d rather get it done today, take risks and live without regrets.

Me: What do you like most about the story in Protostar?

Sydney: There is so much focus on the interaction of the characters. Sure, there is plenty of action and plot twists, along with a fair share of world building, but the natural flow of conversation and dialogue between the characters makes for a seamless and interesting read. The story is so unique and fresh. The author promised to deliver a new spin on an old tale of ‘star-crossed lovers’ and I feel he did an amazing job of it. I can’t wait for readers to see how the story evolves.

Me: This story is to be told over three expansive novels, all told from the deep third person perspective. The author tried to capture a lot of detail and switches back and forth between characters to capture the ‘big picture’ of what is going on in The Star-Crossed Universe. With that being said, the scope of the project is very big. Do you ever feel lost?

Sydney: Yes. It’s a good thing though. I love how the story flows from Earth and back to William’s home-world. The readers are going to love the detailed world-building because they will be able to taste, hear, and feel the environments and locales. Everyone needs to step away from reality from time to time and the world of The Star-Crossed Saga is a great place to start. Everyone is really in for a treat.

Me: What is the one thing you would change about your character’s story if you could change anything at all?

Sydney: I wouldn’t change a single thing. I want to love, fall in love and be loved more than anything else in the entire world. Hopefully, this story will have the happy ending I’m dreaming for. With two other books on the horizon, I’m sure it will.

Anna, first please tell us where you are from and where/who did your love for writing come from?

I was raised in southern California, but after marrying a U.S. Marine I moved around a lot.

I have written stories for as long as I can remember. I still have short stories I wrote in third and fourth grade, but it wasn’t until I won a writing contest in fifth grade and had my story “published” and bound that I realized I wanted to be a writer.

Can you say that your journey to publication was difficult? If so, what were the hardest moments to get through?

I wouldn’t say it was difficult, but it was long! I spent about ten years writing and attempting to get published the traditional route. About two years ago I decided to take control of my own career and self publish.

How do you overcome i-suck-it is, that little voice in your head that tells you your writing isn’t good enough?

I hear that voice so constantly, I would think something was wrong if I didn’t. Honestly, when I feel overwhelmed and doubt creeps in I force myself to focus on one thing at a time. The next scene, the next blog post, or the next e-mail. Then I tune out the negative thoughts and get back to work.

What is your dream vacation?

If I could plan any vacation I would take a luxury cruise to the Mediterranean. Just thinking about it makes me feel more relaxed.

Describe your writing style in five words.

Scary, sexy paranormal romance.

What movies are you currently excited to see?

I’m super excited to see Divergent, Mockingjay Part 1, and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

What are you currently reading?

I just finished reading Divergent by Veronica Roth. Next up is City of Bones by Cassandra Clare.

If you weren’t a writer, what other careers would you pursue?

If I could be anything, I’d be an archeologist. That is so fascinating to me. I love studying history.

For people who haven’t read your novel, how would you summarize the plot?

People who say they hate chocolate (the audacity!) and Mary Sue heroines (ugh!).

To you, what makes a good story?

The characters. I like fun and interesting plots, but good characterization wins me over every time. I love experiencing a hero’s redemption or a heroine’s awakening. That’s why I read stories.

What usually turns you off about a story?

That’s easy! Characters I don’t care about. The story could have the most intricate and exciting plot, but if I don’t care what happens to the main characters I can’t finish it.

If you could collaborate with any author, who would you choose, and why?

I’d love to collaborate on an anthology with one of my favorite authors, like Kresley Cole, JR Ward, or Patricia Briggs.

What is on your night stand?

A sparkly fairy figurine, a framed photo of my hubby and I kissing on our wedding day, and a stapler.

What is your favorite book?

I like so many books, but the one I have re-read the most and still love like the first time I opened it is JR Ward’s Lover Awakened. Zsadist and Bella’s story changed my life.

One of my first memories is dangling over the arm of our living room sofa telling myself a post-apocalyptic survival tale in which my mother and I were the last two people on earth. It was so fun, I never stopped telling stories. In high school, I faked being ill so I could stay home to work on a novel about a nanny who falls in love with her boss' bad boy nephew.
As an adult I earned a college degree, got married, and had a child, but I never stopped writing. It only got more fun. I wrote through my lunch breaks at work. I wrote on the treadmill at the gym. Eventually, I had dozens of short stories, novellas, and full-length novels piling up on thumb drives and in plastic tubs.
Now, I'm ready to share my stories with you, starting with The Dark Caster Series and the Red Plague Trilogy. I hope you love reading them as much as I loved writing them!

“Pleasant but for the brutal murderer who lurks in the Whitechapel District.”
“Are you referring to the killer the newspapers are calling ‘Leather Apron’?” she asked.
He evaluated her with interest yet said nothing.
“I understand this monster killed two unfortunates by ripping their abdomens wide open,” she went on, making no attempt to sugarcoat her words since she was speaking with a surgeon.
“Where did you hear that, Miss Spencer?”
“It said so in the penny dreadfuls. Oh, not that I read them frequently…”
Drake raised an eyebrow.
What am I saying? She didn’t normally babble on so, but this man had lit a fire beneath her, though she couldn’t say why. To her great relief, the doctor didn’t seem to notice her jittering nerves.
“Nasty business, preying on those unknowing women,” he said. “I can’t imagine a man treating any female that way. After all, women are beautiful creatures to be coddled. Admired. Cherished.”
“That’s a lovely thought.” Alba repressed a girlish sigh. “It’s a shame the killer does not share your school of thought.”
Drake wrapped his hands around his back. “I daresay the police believe this murderer will strike again.”
“I fear that is why fewer people came to your party this evening than Teddy anticipated. The city is gripped with fear.” She paused to take a sip of champagne. “Perhaps we should talk about something more uplifting than murder.”
“Yes.” The surgeon took her glass and deposited it on a servant’s tray. With his hand pressed to the small of her back, he guided her to a quiet corner of the drawing room.
As she turned to face him, she could smell hot liquor fumes and the scent of expensive aftershave. Surprisingly, she found that she liked the mixture of aromas.
“Teddy tells me you hail from Romania as well, Miss Spencer. What are the chances of that?”
“Slim, I daresay.”
“You’ve lost a great deal of your accent, but if I had to guess, you are from Bucharest.”
“I am.” How did he know?
His features darkened. “It appears we were destined to meet. And since we have, I’d be fascinated to know more about you.”
Although Alba was taken aback by his boldness, nerves propelled her to continue their conversation in a blabbering rush. “I came to London when I was fourteen—to live with a family friend who runs the dormitory apartments of the Royal Opera’s corps de ballet. Just this year, I graduated from law school. That’s where Teddy and I met—at King’s College. Recently, I’ve been assisting Teddy’s father, Harold Rollingsworth, in the hopes that—”
“—you will become London’s first female barrister.” Drake completed her thought. Tilting his head to the side, he gazed at her with admiration. “Lovely, intelligent, and a pioneer. You are a rare gem, Miss Spencer.”
The Romanian’s hungry stare closed the small distance between them. Alba’s cheeks burned. We hardly know one another!
Desperate to steer the conversation away from herself, she cleared her throat. “I have yet to wish you a happy birthday, Dr. Griffin.”
“Thank you.” The guest of honor did a cordial bow. “But ‘Griffin’ is merely my professional name.”
Alba frowned. “What is your real name?”
“Dimitri Grigorescu.”
Alba’s limbs froze and the room started to take on a slow whirl. “That’s curious,” she murmured. “I knew someone by that name in Romania.”
“And I once knew a girl named Alba Zǎpǎda,” Dimitri said as a curtain of desire passed over his face. “You.”
His lips thinned into a familiar smile and Alba’s hand flew to her gaping mouth. Curse my poor eyesight! Now that she was this close to him she knew precisely who he was: Dimitri, the handsome Gypsy boy she’d fallen in love with at the tender age of fourteen. Words escaped her while she gasped for air.
“Life is too short to be without the ones you love,” Dimitri purred. “Don’t you think?”
All at once, memories of the summer Alba spent in the Balkan countryside flashed through her mind: The first kiss she and Dimitri shared amid a field of white poppies. Simona, Dimitri’s raven-haired friend. And the terrifying night the three of them spent in a haunted graveyard.
Her blood raced and the room spun in faster circles.
“I’ve been waiting an eternity to return this to you,” Dimiti whispered as he slipped a dried white poppy into her hand.

“But I thought you were dead,” she said before everything went black.
