Guest Blog: Wolf's Bane by Ash Krafton

Wolf’s Bane
Demimonde
Book 3
Ash Krafton

Genre: urban fantasy

Book Description:
Since becoming oracle to the demivampire two years ago, advice columnist Sophie has battled werewolves and survived a vampire attack (or two). However, not only was she powerless to save her lover Marek when he slipped to the brink of evolution, she also witnessed his transformation into a falcon, the symbol of Horus United.

Sophie’s quest to save Marek is further complicated when rock star Dierk Adeluf – who also happens to be the king of the Werekind – invites her backstage after a concert. Just when it seems she will find respite from heartache, Sophie is bitten by a werewolf and Dierk decides she is destined to be his queen.

Sophie is caught between the demivamps she loves and the Were who commands her to love him. Throw in his jealous wanna-be girlfriend—a true bitch if ever there was one—and an ambush by witches, and there you have the big mess that Sophie calls her life. And, hello? Her soul mate is still a bird.

She’s supposed to be the girl with all the answers, but Sophie needs more than a little advice–she needs divine intervention.

Accidental Swinger: How a Vamp Chick Fell For the Wolfman

I’ve always had a thing for vampires.

Long ago, I knew the allure of these creatures of the night. When I was a kid, it was Dracula. Vampires were for horror stories, but there was still that lure of power and endless possibilities. When Anne Rice gave us Louis and Lestat, I was done for. She did what no one had done for me before: gave me an emotional connection to the characters.

Vampires were becoming more than alluring. They were seductive. Some were downright sexy.

I’ve always been intrigued by new twists in vampire lore—even that weird stuff HBO’s True Blood put out last season. (Truthfully, I would have put up with A LOT of weird stuff for the sake of Eric Northman. Can I get an amen?)

I suppose my hunger for new vamps is what led me to write the Demimonde series. I can get all the vamp action I want, as twisty as I want it—which I happily did when I created my demivampires with mythologic Egyptian origins.

When I wrote Bleeding Hearts, my focus was on the race of demivamps. Actual vampires were soulless and bad. There was no confusion as to whose side I was on.

There were werewolves, too. Werewolves were lawless and yucky. Again, I’m Team DV. I never really got into werewolves—most of the films I’d seen had hairy, grotesque, misshapen drooling mutts. Not sexy. Not seductive. Just—I don’t know, squishy. Even Buffy’s pal Oz was a kid hunched over in bad makeup. Tiny bit lame.

The only werewolf that did anything to keep me interested was Michael Sheen’s character in Underworld. All credit goes to his awesome self for giving lycans a fighting chance in my whole vamp vs. were grudge war.

As I continued the series, Sheen’s lycan character reminded me that werewolves were creatures, too—they had their quirks, their powers, and just as many possibilities as vampires. If I could twist vampires to give me the exact character I wanted, why couldn’t I mess with the laws of were-nature and make the kind of wolves I wanted?

Thus, Toby came along, the Big Bad Wolfboy that becomes Sophie’s next stray. Blood Rush give a little insight to Were nature from a decidedly Toby perspective. While my characters slowly warmed up to the fuzzy guy, I personally wasn’t having any of it. I was straight for the vamp side. Vampire hetero. Were phobic. Whatever you want to call it. I was a die-hard vamp chick. And, as a Were, Toby did squeamish Were things. Hey, that’s the way the ball bounces.

And then…

The third book began to brew. If you haven’t guessed by now, there’s a lot of Were action in this one.

Even as I wrote and edited the first two books, I planned on having a central Were conflict. Every book needs conflict, a struggle, a choice—so a Were character seemed like perfect fodder. It wasn’t until I really got submerged in writing that I realized that the conflict wasn’t coming out black-and-white, good versus evil, the way I’d pictured it.

And it wasn’t until I was near completion that I realized the conflict was so much more complex than that. If we knew definitely what was right and what was wrong, we’d have no trouble making our choices. The conflict became complex because the author was experiencing conflicts of her own.

My feelings towards Weres had changed. How it pains me to write this.

Wolf’s Bane lacked matted fur and werewolf glue. The Were were beautiful creatures who followed their nature, and they were led by a man who wanted them to strive toward civility, not beastial baseness. Sophie was forced to re-evaluate Werekind and to face her prejudice and her fears.

In writing it, I was forced to face my own, as well.

It certainly helps that Dierk is the man he is—the rockstar, the leader, the gentleman suitor. Whatever Sophie came to feel for him during the course of the story, it’s a pretty fair thing to say it’s because I felt the same thing.

Never figured I’d turn out to be a swinger. I’m definitely a one-guy, one-species kind of gal. But if I were a character in the Books of the Demimonde, maybe…just maybe. <3

Thank you so much for joining us today, Ash. We really enjoyed the visit. Good luck and great sales with Wolf's Bane.

Excerpt:
Dimitri crossed the room and sat on the bed, taking in the listless state of the vampire.  He observed that Léopold’s eyes were now closed, and the wound had started bubbling apart.  Before he could stop himself, he’d made the suggestion.
“I’ll feed you.”
Léopold’s eyes flew open, meeting Dimitri’s. “What?”
“You heard me.  Come on, let’s do this thing.  You can bite my arm, right?”
“I don’t know…I can’t ask this of you.  The donors, they come to me freely.”
“Yeah, well, so do I.  Come on.  You did this for Wynter.  You had her back, I have yours.  It’s no big deal, right?  I mean, it’s not like you’re going to have some weird bond to me.”
“No.” Léopold gave him a small smile. “No bonds.  No sires or anything. But still…”
“The faster you’re on your feet, the faster we can go try to find connections to Mariah’s past.”
Léopold’s lips tightened and he looked away.
“Ya know I’m right.  We can’t waste any more time.  You didn’t fly me all the way out here to lie around, did ya?”
“No, but I don’t think this is a good idea.”
“Well let me put it this way…At some point, possibly very soon, whoever wanted that kid dead is going to realize that she’s still very much alive.  Then they’re gonna go after her again.  And since she’s staying with Logan, I don’t want them going after my Alpha and his mate.  So let’s go.  Come on, just take a little, enough to get you by until we find your donor.”
“I won’t need much.  Your blood; it’s strong.  You’re wolf,” Léopold admitted.
“There ya go, then.  Let’s get to…what do you need here?” Dimitri sat on the bed and considered how best to feed a vampire.  What the fuck am I thinking?  Too late now.  He sat cross-legged, and then changed his mind, lying onto his back.
Léopold grew amused at his friend’s insistence.  Not that he didn’t appreciate the offer, but he wasn’t accustomed to needing anyone.  Dimitri’s blood, given in friendship, felt all too intimate, making him uncomfortable.  Yet the lancing pain to his gut reminded him of his dire situation.  He shifted onto his side, cradling Dimitri’s arm in his hands.  Slowly he lowered his head to the wolf’s wrist.  The aromatic scent of blood called to him as he found the strong beating pulse.
“You’re sure?” he asked, locking eyes on Dimitri’s.
“Yeah, I can take it.  Do it now, before I change my mind.”  Dimitri glanced away as if someone was about to give him a needle.
Without hesitation, Léopold’s fangs extended, striking the wolf’s arm.  He closed his eyes, allowing the pungent flavor to coat his tongue.  Deliberately, he suctioned the life-sustaining fluid, releasing his own power into Dimitri’s body.  Léopold, grateful for the gift, would cause the wolf no pain, only pleasure.  He knew Dimitri would resist, confused by his reaction to the bite.  Léopold clutched the wrist to his lips, watching as his friend’s body bowed off the bed.
As soon as Dimitri felt the pinpricks, his body flooded with unexpected warmth.  The tug of Léopold’s lips sent a rush of blood to his cock.  What the fuck is happening?  He wanted to rip his arm away from the vampire, but he felt paralyzed to fight.  Desire washed over him from head to toe and before he knew what he was doing, his own hand had reached to grip his shaft through the fine cotton shorts.  Stiff as a board, he stroked himself, attempting to relieve the pressure.  Goddess, this feels wrong on so many levels.  His mind screamed at him to move, to struggle, yet his lips parted, releasing only a moan.
Léopold licked the wounds he’d caused, and released Dimitri’s arm.  Thoroughly energized, he sat up, and stared down at Dimitri, whose face had grown tight in both arousal and anger.  Léopold laughed, and rolled off the bed.  He watched in amusement as the wolf attempted to launch himself off the mattress but fell backwards, clutching himself.
“Fuck me.” Dimitri shook his head at the realization of what he’d just said.  He quickly took his hand off his groin and glared at Léopold. “No.  I didn’t mean that.  Don’t touch me.”
“You’re fine,” Léopold assured him.  He glanced in the mirror and finger-combed his hair back into place.
“This,” Dimitri gestured to his erection, “is not funny.  Goddammit, I need to get laid.  Not that you aren’t pretty, Leo, but you’re not my type.  Shit, look what you did.”
“You may recall that I told you that feeding from you was not a good idea.  But I must admit, your blood is fine.  Very tasty.”  A broad smile broke across his face.
“Really, Leo?  What the hell, man?”
“Sorry, but there aren’t many choices when it comes to a bite, you know.  Would you have rather had pain?  I’m not a sadist by nature, but if you’d preferred it…”
“No.”  Dimitri pushed himself up so that he was sitting on the edge of the bed.  His painful erection was finally starting to subside.
“Well, then, you have to admit that it didn’t hurt.  Go get a shower, see to your need.  I’d love to help you but I’m afraid you’re not my preference either, wolf.”
“Really, so you give hard-ons but no blow jobs?  Lucky me.  For the record, if I ever am dumb enough to suggest this again, would you please just say no?”  Dimitri hobbled over to the bathroom door.
“Hey wolf,” Léopold called from the doorway.
Dimitri lifted his gaze to him. “Yeah?”
“Seriously, Dimitri. I appreciate you helping me.  I should’ve paid more attention. I let myself get run down.  It won’t happen again.”
“No problem.”
“You need to know that it has been a very long time for me…this friendship thing.  This isn’t something someone like me does.” Or deserves. Léopold’s eyes darkened and his tone grew serious. “These few days have been quite the adventure, and I suspect there is more to come.  I must ask, however, that you keep what you experienced tonight to yourself.  Not the bite but the travel.  Logan knows as I couldn’t hide it from him when I showed up in his house last night.  But no one else.  It’s a special ability…one I’d prefer others not know about.  Understood?”
“My lips are zipped.” Dimitri sensed sadness in Léopold.  As wolf, with his pack, he was never truly alone.  Perhaps he underestimated the loneliness that plagued the vampire.

“Well, then…see you downstairs in a few.  I’ve got someone I want you to meet,” Léopold commented as he left the room.

Interview: Paranormal Romance Fans for Life would like to extend a warm welcome to Theresa Meyers, author of One Night with the Shifter.  Theresa, first please tell us where you are from and  where/who did your love for writing come from?
Hi! Thanks so much for the invite to hang out here today. I’m really fairly average as people go – I’m a mom with kids, cats, a dog, horses and a parakeet.  I’ve been an avid reader most of my life and I think storytelling is part of my genetics. While she wasn’t a writer, my mother was an elementary teacher and a storyteller her whole life. She influenced me in a number of ways. Storytelling was the first gift from her. A love of books and learning how to read was the second gift, which was a big deal for me since it took me nearly until fifth grade to read easily with my dyslexia. The third gift she gave was a belief in what we can’t see – the paranormal if you will.
Just as example, when I was little she read the story of the shoemaker and the elves to me right before bed. My room was a mess. Right after she’d finished the story she got very quiet and asked if I heard something. Sure enough there were little squeaky voices outside my window! They were talking about how they were going to clean up my room. My mother convinced me we had elves living in our big tree stump in the back yard. In the morning I woke to find my room clean. My mom even helped me make cookies and little clothes for the elves as a thank you. It wasn’t until I was in my 20s that I learned she’d put a tape recorder with a long blank space at the beginning of the tape and had recorded the little voices herself. But it didn’t matter. It was things like this that taught me to be open to the world around me in a different way which is likely why writing paranormal romances, steampunk with a paranormal twist, and urban fantasy stories are some of my favorites.
Right now I live on a mini-farm outside of Seattle in the little town of Port Orchard. LOL. I say little, but it’s at least four times bigger than the town I grew up in Sutherlin, Oregon! My office in the turret of my Victorian house looks out over the horse pasture and fruit trees lining our driveway. It’s a great room, with five windows. The only drawback is there’s not much wall space for bookshelves! I’ve got a spot for my long-haired calico to supervise my writing and usually my day starts and ends around the schedule of my two busy teens and the feeding times for the animals.
Can you say that your journey to publication was difficult? If so, what were the hardest moments to get through?
That’s kind of a trick question when it comes to me. I started having my writing published nationally when I was 17 and got a short story piece published in Merlin’s Pen as part of an extra credit English assignment in high school. I wrote for newspapers for years and magazines, but in fiction I’ve been writing far, far longer than I’ve been published. I started writing my first romance novel when I was seventeen as a self-created elective my senior year along with a few friends. As long as we produced written pages and showed progress in our chosen writing projects, we were given an A for the class. My first novel was published by Harlequin in 2009 and since then I’ve been thrilled to have several more. One Night with the Shifter will be my sixteenth published book, but probably the twentieth I’ve written.
How do you overcome i-suck-it is, that little voice in your head that tells you your writing isn’t good enough?
Honestly, most of the time I just tell it to shut the hell up and go get an ice cream or something, I’m busy. I learned a long time ago that EVERYONE sucks at the first draft. That’s not important. What’s important is what you do with the raw material once you’ve got it down on the page. Once I learned that the little voice couldn’t intimidate me anymore because it was a non issue. It’s kind of like when someone says, something they think will mentally tear you down like “You’re fat.” Or “You’re a bitch.” If you look them straight in the eye and answer “Yeah, and?” the taunt becomes totally flat and powerless. Own that you suck, and know you will fix it because that’s your job as a writer, then move on.
What is your dream vacation?
A trip all over Europe with family and friends in the sunshine with great food, drinks and music.
Describe your writing style in five words.
Adventurous, otherworldly, sexy, descriptive and fun.
What movies are you currently excited to see?
I still haven’t gotten to see Catching Fire and I want to see that. I’m also still want to see The Great Gatsby and Anna Karenina. I love watching movies, but I usually tend to save them as rewards for getting my current work-in-progress finished.
What are you currently reading?
A book about the spice trade for a historical I’m researching, several fiction books, some contemporary and others paranormal, and The 5 Love Languages which is a relationship book.
If you weren’t a writer, what other careers would you pursue?
The funny thing is I’ve already pursued a lot of other careers. I’ve been a professional florist/hotel decorator, a magazine freelancer, a public relations maven working at some very impressive agencies, a business owner of my own public relations agency, a substitute teacher, and an office secretary. I guess if I ever pursued something other than writing I might want to run a bed and breakfast in a very cool humongous Victorian house or castle or become a painter.
If you could create a holiday of your own, what would it be called?
Humm. A holiday. I’ve never contemplated that before. It would have to be in June (my birthday month), and it would have to involve giving flowers because I adore flowers. And tea. And cake. And dancing—but only if you want to. Maybe Carpe Diem day?
For people who haven’t read your novel, how would you summarize the plot?
A one-night stand with a sexy werewolf has unexpected consequences for an elementary teacher from a small town.
After he is exiled from his pack, Tyee Grayson must learn to make it on his own. But one night with a beautiful stranger who has luminous blue eyes changes everything…. Especially when his instincts shout that she is the one.
All elementary school teacher Jessica Brierly wanted was a night on the wild side, but when she finds herself pregnant, all the rules change. Not only does her lover have more secrets than she ever imagined, but suddenly they're both fighting off vampires. When vampires attack the town she dearly loves, Ty must work with his old pack to save them from a ruthless enemy who could kill not only his mate and his unborn child—but the entire human race.
What are two of your pet-peeves?
*shakes head* This sounds so damn petty, but I really hate it when the kids put the toilet paper on so that it rolls from underneath instead of over the top because then the cats can completely unroll the entire thing leaving me to reroll it from the pile of tissue on the floor. Second pet peeve is when people in my family rearrange my kitchen cupboards or my office thinking they are helping. I really like to cook so I know where all my spices and baking goods are and when they “clean it up” I can’t find anything!
To you, what makes a good story?
I guess the same things I write into my stories. Depth of character and world-building. A vibrant, lush story that takes you somewhere else for awhile. Great characters with strong motivations and a fun fast-paced plot with lots of action.
What usually turns you off about a story?
Stories with characters who make silly decisions without any motivation. Writers call them TSTL (or Too Stupid Too Live) – you know what I’m talking about—the girl who walks down the steps of the abandoned house in the dark towards the weird noises in the basement after all her friends have been brutally murdered around her.
If you could collaborate with any author, who would you choose, and why?
I’d love to collaborate with my critique partner, Cherry Adair, someday and write a book with her, rather than just the two of us picking apart and re-shaping one another’s stories in critique.
What is on your night stand?
My Kindle Fire and a cold cup of tea.
What is your favorite book?
So not fair! I can’t tell you that because I love all kinds of stories, but what I can tell you is some of my favorite authors: James Rollins, J.K. Rowling, Yasmine Galenorn, Julia Quinn, Cherry Adair, Arnette Lamb.
Thank you so much for joining us today, Theresa! We really enjoyed the insights. Good luck with One Night with the Shifter.

About the Author:
Raised by a bibliophile who made the dining room into a library, Theresa has always been a lover of books and stories. First a writer for newspapers, then for national magazines, she started her first novel in high school, eventually enrolling in a Writer's Digest course and putting the book under the bed until she joined Romance Writers of America in 1993. In 2005 she was selected as one of eleven finalists for the American Title II contest, the American Idol of books.
She is married to the first man she ever went on a real date with (to their high school prom), who she knew was hero material when he suffered through having to let her parents drive, and her brother sit between them in the backseat of the car.
They currently live in a Victorian house on a mini farm in the Pacific Northwest with their two children, three cats, two horses, an energetic mini-Aussie shepherd, a rabbit, parakeet and an out-of-control herb garden.
