Hocus Pocus, Bring on the Focus…

There have been a few times in my life when I could have used a good potion. A potion to cure tongue-tiedness, a potion to melt away a dozen pounds of fat, a potion to bestow everlasting youth upon my wrinkling face. Alas, I’ve yet to find an elixir for much of anything, not counting coffee that merely endows a shaky energy upon its victim.

What’s a writer to do when the real thing doesn’t exist? Why, she makes it up and adds it to her imaginary world that everyone else calls a novel.

Syphon’s Song has a potionness…a mage whose true power enables her to create elixirs that affect a mage’s physical body as well as his/her energetic aspects. Her name is Althea and she appears in the story only for the blink of an eye, long enough to serve a potion to one crazy character who downs it. Presto chango…clarity! Pretty close to what I could have used last week when my ‘to do’ list lengthened past the realm of possible. Not only were there not enough hours in the day to accomplish it all, there wasn’t enough mental fuel in my tank to energize me through those long hours of needed focus.

I needed a focus potion.

Caffeine wasn’t the entire answer. I needed to go past what coffee could offer. (Think colossal final exams that test you over everything you’ve learned in your life. This was the type of challenge my brain faced. It’s called massive editing on a tight deadline.)

I needed a potion that would keep my brain sharp and my focus honed. Though I didn’t have a bubbling brew of magic handy, I found my version of it…ping pong. I took short breaks and played with my ten-year-old. He pretended we were in the French Open and commentated the play during our matches. I was Djokovic. He was Nadal. (If you, like me, don’t know tennis, those are two of the top men in the world. The French Open was on TV while we were playing. Nadal beat Djokovic to win.)

My magic potion for renewing my focus was a droplet of physical activity with a heavy dose of laughter, consumed within fifteen minutes in the company of one of my favorite people in the world. The power of love and laughter…just the thing a romance writer needs to renew her soul…just the thing we all need. Should you ever find yourself in need of some magic in your own life, I wish you a potion of ping-pong power.

Blog Title: Breathing life into A Character - Misty Rapnel

Inside the world of a book series, character development begins of course with the first book. I want to share how I went about shelling-out a particular character. Before I decided on which character I would share with you, I turned to my reviews to see what Egyptian Moon – Return readers had to say. Two reviews in particular flashed back at me.

Many reviewers use general terms; I believe this is done to prevent giving away spoilers. Take a look at snippets from the following reviewers that specifically relates to characters.

Goodreads Snippet

This novel was very readable. I read most of it in one sitting and I wasn't bored the whole time. I really like Miller's writing style. She didn't go overboard with purple prose or anything like that.

I also adored Megan's roommate from the south. She was adorable and very likable. I wish that she had been the main character because she is so interesting and funny. I liked all her sayings and I might read some of the later books in the series just so I can see what happens to her.

This book really was a page turner. It was so easy to empathize with Meg, the main character. I felt the pain of her relationship and the pain of trying to begin college and friendships that aren't always what we expect. This book really grabbed me because it was an usual concept of possession. Good read! I highly recommend it and look forward to the next book.

When reviewers began to say what they like or even dislike about a character (s), a writer knows that they have breathed life into that character. My decision today is to tell you a bit about supporting character, Misty Rapnel.

Misty is a junior that transferred to MNU from Texas Tech U. She is one of the roommates of Megan Smart (my main character). Inside the covers of Egyptian Moon – Return, Misty took her first breath with a Texas dialect and have played it up with Texan slangs and witty comments throughout the book. For instance, Megan’s first interaction with Misty took place inside their college dormitory quad. “It’s hotter than screwing flat on my back in a field at noon,” Misty said.

As the story develops readers found that they could always count on Misty for an off-the-wall perception to whatever conversation taking place, such as: when the girls arrived at their first frat party off campus, Misty’s quick witted flirt sounded off with: “Who wee, y’all, I’m going to round up the beef tonight and I’m starting with Todd.”

After Megan’s freaky woes had her spinning out of control, she asked Misty to take her home to Cary, North Carolina. While Tangie and Megan rode inside Misty’s metallic red Chevy Silverado, Tangie found out that Misty kept unmentionables in her glove compartment—underwear to be exact. Tangie could not resist asking Misty if her panties were clean as they had fallen on Tangie’s feet. Misty’s response was: “Why, of course they are, little darling. Come hell or high water, I was determined to ride this horse from Lubbock to Winston Salem in less than the estimated twenty-something hours and I don’t like hotels eating up my cash reserve, and I don’t ride women with dirty drawers in my car, even if that woman with the dirty drawers is me.”

Misty’s light hearted term of endearment when referring to Megan is “Sweet tea.” And there’s something between her and cows because she always talks about them. Her Texas analogies always raises the questions of “what did she just say.” Misty Rapnel confesses that she is no jaw jacker—meaning she lives up to what she says,

I think you will agree with my reviewer that Misty Rapnel added memorable spice in a unique and light hearted way. Megan’s plight in dealing with reincarnation issues were made bearable by the supporting character of Misty Rapnel from Lubbock Texas.

Recently, I met one of my handsome nephews who actually was born and raised in the Dallas/Fort Worth area where he still resides. Glen, who I hadn’t seen in years, actually speaks with that charming southern drawl. Family members took to the historic streets of Savannah Georgia’s riverfront to celebrate my husband’s birthday. As I sat at a restaurant table, I took notice of my nephew’s home grown Texan accent and thought about Misty. It was as if she was there—long model legs, narrow waistline, sugary voice, long blonde hair with platinum highlights, deep blue eyes. You’re gonna love Misty, along with Megan and Tyler too.

Why Epic Fantasy Romance?

For those who might not know, epic fantasy romances are fantasy stories that take place in worlds that aren’t Earth (this is as opposed to Urban Fantasy or Paranormal which are Earth-based fantasy stories). I often tell people to think Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones. But I always want to include the warning that the genre is much more diverse than just those two worlds, so don’t let that limit your idea of what epic fantasy can be. A lot of it will really appeal to paranormal romance readers. My Fire and Tears series is a case in point.

So why do I write epic fantasy? Because I LOVE making stuff up. Seriously, that’s my prime motivating factor. In epic fantasy, I get to make everything up as I go along. I’m a mad crazy world-builder, and for this particular subgenre, the only thing I really have to do is make sure I’m consistent and that my world feels real enough that readers aren’t thrown out of it. Otherwise, my imagination is the limit.

That’s just too much fun to resist. *g*

 I write epic fantasy romance so I can play. It’s a little like being a professional athlete—I’m being paid to play! (Okay, I’m not paid nearly as much as most pro athletes but hey, I can pretend! After all, that’s what I’m good at—pretending.)

Also, I love swords and bow and arrows. I know, I know, I could incorporate those into a paranormal or urban fantasy (and I do when I write those if the story lets me), but when I think swords and bows, I think epic fantasy so that’s where my imagination goes.

And that’s why I write epic fantasy romance—playtime, make-believe worlds, and the weaponry. Oh and elves! I love elves.

So what kinds of “fantasy” elements do you like in stories? I love dragons too! I just don’t have any in this current series. Yet… *g*

FUN VISUALS FOR A WARLOCK’S DANCE

I often wonder what comes to mind when someone says the word “warlock” in this modern era. Those of you who play online games might imagine the ghoulish demon from Warcraft.  Or if you’re into alternative music, you may think of The Warlocks, an L.A. based  band.

Of course, many of you might summon up mental pictures of Voldemort in the Harry Potter movies, but personally, I like to envision my warlock as a sexy sorcerer…a man who commands with a magic touch. For fun, I’ve prepared a visual collage (my inspiration, as it were!) for A WARLOCK’S DANCE. It’s my first novella in the Cursed Princes series and if you get a chance to read it, I hope you enjoy it!

Feast your eyes on Lucian Ivanu (a.k.a Ryan Gosling). With his dreamy eyes, self-deprecating personality, and light hair, you can almost imagine him saying what Lucian says to Giselle in the novella: “Lie back and let me work my magic. I’m a warlock, remember?” Yowza!!!

For my Giselle muse, I envisioned lovely Jessica Biel. She’s model-perfect, married to Justin Timberlake, has a successful acting career—and if she had Giselle’s incredible singing voice in A WARLOCK’S DANCE, we’d really hate her!!

The evil enchantress who turns Giselle into a mute, old woman is none other than Sharon Stone. Sultry, seductive, and entirely selfish, Ileana Zǎpǎda has no qualms conniving her way through life. To get what she wants, she decides to strip away Giselle’s looks and operatic singing voice on her wedding day…

This piece of jewelry gives you an idea of what Lucian’s enchanted ring looks like…the ring he needs in order to resurrect his warlock powers.  Unfortunately, after forsaking those powers, he buried the powerful ring inside his uncle’s crypt. Will Lucian be brave enough to creep into the graveyard at midnight to retrieve it?

Finally, this is how I pictured the streets of Romania as Giselle scurries along them in 1888. Hobbling over the cobblestones in a race against the clock, she hunts for Lucian—trying desperately to evade Ileana’s revengeful reach. If only Giselle’s spindly legs and decrepit heart didn’t ache so…

In the end, does Giselle find Lucian and convince him to help her? Does she recapture his love? And most importantly, does she regain her former beauty and talent?

Me: So, tell everyone your name.

Sydney: My name is Sydney Gresham.

Me: Thank you for participating in this interview. Can you please tell the readers a little something about yourself?

Sydney: I’m a simple country girl of the small town of Madisonburg. Nothing ever happens in this town and I am sure that even on the eve of my seventeenth birthday, nothing is going to change. That is, until the visitor shows up.

Me: Tell me a little bit more about that experience?

Sydney: It started with this crazy dream I had one night. I remember being whisked away in the arms of a shadowy figure and he took me across stars and planets. When we returned to Earth, I tried to touch him and he disappeared. I woke up and could not shake the feeling that I would ether see him again or that I had met him before. The next day, this boy named William showed up at my grandmother’s door asking for help to get back home. Now, it’s getting a little weird because I have that same feeling like I did when I awakened from the dream. It’s like I’ve known him from some other life. We are definitely growing close the longer he stays here. I only hope that we can become something more before he returns home.  

Me: Interesting. What do you love most about your character?

Sydney: I’m a love of the experience of being alive. It’s so boring here in Madisonburg. I’ve dreamed of a time when things would shake up a bit around here and since the ‘quake, they certainly have. I love hanging with my girls and sharing moments with Sarah on the couch, recollecting the times when my parents were alive.

Me: And what do you hate most?

Sydney: I can be a bit careless. My care free personality could be the end of me; at least that’s what Henry stresses. I’m probably a too trusting for my own good. But I just believe that you have to live for the here and now. I don’t want to waste time wondering what I could have done. I’d rather get it done today, take risks and live without regrets. 

Me: What do you like most about the story in Protostar?

Sydney: There is so much focus on the interaction of the characters. Sure, there is plenty of action and plot twists, along with a fair share of world building, but the natural flow of conversation and dialogue between the characters makes for a seamless and interesting read. The story is so unique and fresh. The author promised to deliver a new spin on an old tale of ‘star-crossed lovers’ and I feel he did an amazing job of it. I can’t wait for readers to see how the story evolves.

Me: This story is to be told over three expansive novels, all told from the deep third person perspective. The author tried to capture a lot of detail and switches back and forth between characters to capture the ‘big picture’ of what is going on in The Star-Crossed Universe. With that being said, the scope of the project is very big. Do you ever feel lost?

Sydney: Yes. It’s a good thing though. I love how the story flows from Earth and back to William’s home-world. The readers are going to love the detailed world-building because they will be able to taste, hear, and feel the environments and locales. Everyone needs to step away from reality from time to time and the world of The Star-Crossed Saga is a great place to start. Everyone is really in for a treat. 

Me: What is the one thing you would change about your character’s story if you could change anything at all?

Sydney: I wouldn’t change a single thing. I want to love, fall in love and be loved more than anything else in the entire world. Hopefully, this story will have the happy ending I’m dreaming for. With two other books on the horizon, I’m sure it will.

Guest Blog by author Julia Debski: The World of The Hazel Tree

The land where The Hazel Tree is set in a parallel world to the one we live in. Ivy and everyone else live on planet Earth, but it’s very different to this one.

Geography

            Geographically, the world is the same. The continents just as green, and the oceans just as deep. The Orarius Pack (or the Costal Pack) is located in northeastern North America. It reaches from North Carolina to Quebec but only goes as far west West Virginia and Toronto.  The capital, where Matthias and Ivy live, is in the North Carolina’s Appalachian Mountains, as that is where the territory began before it expanded to its current size. The Mara Negra Pack (Black Sea Pack) lies in southeastern Europe and the Middle East. This means the territory covers Romania and Ukraine, through Turkey, to Georgia, Lebanon and Azerbaijan. (Google is your friend!!)

            Religion

            There are hundreds of religions among the werewolves all over the world, but they all revolve around the moon in one way or another, hazel trees and water. The main religion of the Orarius pack, and across the Earth, believes the first nine packs of the world were born from nine hazel trees which grew around a sacred pool. The men emerged from the water and the women from the trees. They were mated in pairs and began the Alpha lines – from one of which Matthias is descended. 

            History

            Despite the different religions and beliefs the wolves have about the origins of werewolves in this world, werewolves and humans evolved next to one another - one didn’t come before the other. Unfortunately, werewolves’ physical superiority meant that humans got left behind in more ways than one. They became servants and slaves, and fell prey to disease. Humans ended up dying out a couple hundred years before Ivy was born. Since then, they have become a symbol of weakness.

About the Author:

Julia Debski was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1996. Her family moved around a lot during her childhood before finally settling down in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It wasn't until the 8th grade that she found her passion for writing. It was thanks to a particularly inspiring English teacher and a story that needed to be told. So she began to write, and she never stopped.
Four years later she found herself with nearly a dozen started novels and short stories. As junior in high school she was introduced to Greg Wilkey, a self-published independent author of four novels. He soon became a mentor to her as she worked to write and self-publish her own novel. After two years of hard work, and a nearly a year of mentorship The Hazel Tree was published in October 2013.
