Music and the Writing Playlist

It doesn’t matter what country you’re from, or what language you speak, there is one thing that’s universal: the love of music. Which is why it’s no surprise readers adore seeing what their favorite authors listen to while writing. Which song or artist kept the creative juices flowing? What genre of music do they listen to? What mood does the music set? I’ve recently released my tenth book, and I know I couldn’t have completed many scenes without the aid of a playlist. Music has a tendency to relax our mind and body, help us forget our problems, and allow us to just drift along with the melody. For me, it’s all about envisioning
other worlds and losing myself in those daydreams. Music, much like reading, is an escape. So, without further ado, here’s the list of songs I listened to while writing Mind’s Eye:
“Endlessly” - Green River Ordinance
“Texas Rain” - Sleeperstar
“Ocean Wide” - The Afters
“Down” - Jason Walker (This was featured on an episode of The Vampire Diaries!)
“Our July in the Rain” - He Is We
“When I’m with You” - Faber Drive
“Telescope” - Graham Colton

I know. It’s an extremely short list, but I kept it on repeat throughout the entire writing process. More than likely, this playlist will stick with me throughout the remainder of the trilogy, and I’ll be tacking on a few more songs.

What’s your favorite music to listen to while blocking out the rest of the world?

About the Author:
Rebecca expressed her creative side at an early age and hasn’t stopped since. She won’t hesitate to tell you that she lives inside her imagination, and it’s better than reality.
She’d insert something here along the lines of living in the Northeast, USA, or Europe, with her wonderful husband and their dogs, but these things haven’t happened yet. Instead, she’ll tell you she’s an avid gamer, chocoholic, coffee addict, animal lover, and owns way too many books and shoes.

Guest Blog: Fatal Desire by Valerie Twombly

FATAL DESIRE
Guardians Series
Book 2
Valerie Twombly

Print Length: 250 pages
Publisher: Resplendence Publishing, LLC
Publication Date:  March 26, 2014

About the Book:
Caleb is dark, hot, and commanding in human form. As a dragon, he’s a force to be reckoned with. When he witnesses the slave Lileta being beaten by his Overlord Odage, he nearly comes unglued. Without understanding why, he asks to take the slave as his own, but soon realizes his longing is more than an attraction to a beautiful woman. In a sick twist of fate, the gods have given him a demon as his mate—one he can never touch unless he wishes his own death. His only choice is to grant her freedom.

Lileta wanted to kill Caleb, but when she is freed by this tempting male, her anger turns to a desire that can only prove fatal. Even if she could claim him as her own, her dark past makes her unworthy of his love.

When their paths continue to intertwine, spiraling them to the brink of passion, can they resist the yearnings burning within them, or will they submit to their fatal desire?

PRFL is thrilled to share author Valerie Twombly's guest post ~ enjoy!

Today I’m going to share a few tidbits you might want to know about Fatal Desire and the couple that grace its pages. Caleb and Lileta.
First let me begin by saying book two was not supposed to be Caleb’s story. If you read Eternal Flame, he made a brief appearance and I had no plan to write about him this early in the series. However, he is very vocal and insisted this be his book. I know better than to argue with a dragon and I can say with all honesty I’m glad I listened. His story was a challenge, but I’ve grown very fond of this man and I hope you will too.
So in book two I tie up a couple loose ends. Cassie and Marcus’s baby and we get to see what really lies behind Odage and his evil heart. Of course being the wicked woman I am, I opened a few more cans of worms for the reader to dissect J
Caleb, is a Draki. A dragon shifter who is stubborn, pissy, loyal, kind and gentle in one moment and lethal in the next. He’s not a Guardian, but one of many other immortals living among us. Like some of the demons, his people have held an alliance with the Guardians and helped keep the peace for centuries.
One of the things I love about Caleb, is his dedication. It shines through when he’s faced with a hard choice. Often he will put others before his own heartache. You gotta love a man who can be so lethal, yet have a heart of gold.
Lileta, is a Kothar demon. A woman of great beauty, her people have become targets to the slave traders. I love this woman! She shows us her vulnerable side. Like many women she often feels insecure and unworthy. However, don’t let her fool you. She will risk her own life to save another and has a heart bigger than most. Even when she feels let down and trampled on, she will fight for the life of another
Now if you remember in book one I mentioned how Kothar demons were lethal to dragons. Their body fluids poison to them. Great! My dragon declared Lileta as his when he insisted on this story. I accepted the challenge and now I can think of no two people who belong together more. They complement each other. When one is unsure the other is their rock.
So strap on your seatbelt, their story is a bumpy ride full of twists and turns. Is there a happy ending? Perhaps ;-)

Thank you, Valerie!

About The Author:

As a child, Valerie would often get into trouble for peeking at her mother’s favorite TV show, Dark Shadows. She can still hear her mother saying “It will give you nightmares.” She was right of course, but that did not stop Valerie from watching. As an adult, her love of the fanged creatures never waned. She would watch any vampire movie she could find.
Being a true romantic, Valerie was thrilled when she discovered the genre of paranormal romance. Her first read was one of Lara Adrian’s, Midnight Breed Series and from there she was hooked.
Today, Valerie has decided to take her darker, sensual side and put it to paper. When she is not busy creating a world full of steamy, hot men and strong, seductive women, she juggles her time between a full-time job, hubby and her two German shepherd dogs, in Northern IL.

Baltic Mist - A Timeless Saga is Jen Lohr's next big creation.
It all began when she came across Egil’s Saga, written in the mid11th century, chronicling the life of Egil Skallagrimsson. The history surrounding the Viking awakened within Jen an unquenchable thirst for knowledge of the Norse culture. A story was soon born, seen through the eyes of a young woman named Helga, originating from a character in Egil's Saga.
Baltic Mist begins on a farm Norway, and takes the reader through the epic adventures of Helga's enchanting life. Beginning in Book One, her tale falls against the backdrop of Scandinavia's conversion to Christianity.  The saga continues in Books two and three to a finale that no one, even Helga herself, could have ever imagined!

Book Spotlight & Guest Blog: In Our Dream by Jacqueline Paige

In Our Dream
Dream Series
Part 1
Jacqueline Paige

Release date December 10 2013

Guest Blog by Author Jacqueline Paige
All about Dreams

When I first began writing many gave me the title of Queen of Curses, so many of my stories were about one curse or another. It would seem after that ran its course I wandered into the world of dreams. I didn’t even realize I was doing it at first, but now with so many of my stories having some link to dreams (awake or asleep) I may be receiving a new nickname soon.
The second book in the Hidden Senses trilogy, Dream Visions, dealt with physic dreams. The first book in my soon to be released Ancestor’s Enchantment trilogy, The Witch Within, also has a story line with dreams. Then of course there is my Dream Series where I took it to another level and had the main characters meet in a dream.
I think everyone at some point has had that dream where a complete stranger was in it and it left you
puzzling out who that person could be. For Jennah from In Our Dream she repetitively has dreams with the same intriguing man in them. When the dreams begin happening when she’s wide awake things start to get interesting for her. All I can say is I wish I had some of her dreams. Without giving too much away, I leave you with some of the opening of In Our Dream.
“Tell me your name.”
The unfamiliar voice was intense, yet gentle, and it resonated in all the right places inside of her. “Jennah Best.” She glanced around, trying to place where they were.
“I’m Dominic.”
His voice was so close to her ear, she jumped and looked behind her. Several inches above her face, she peered into dark, mesmerizing brown eyes. “Where are we?” She skimmed over his short, black hair and broad, shadowed jaw as she waited for an answer.
He smiled at her. “Where would you like to be?”
She laughed. “A thousand places, but that’s not the point—where are we?” She tried again to recognize something, everything seemed obscured, yet he was right in front of her and very clear. “Do I know you?”
He shook his head slowly. “No, but we are changing that.” He smiled at her again and she couldn’t help but smile back. He held out one large hand to her. “Walk with me.”
It wasn’t really a question, or an order, and she did want to know what was going on, so she put her hand in his and flushed a little when she felt the heat as his large hand close around hers. She had almost been thinking she was dreaming this. “I don’t mean to sound repetitive, but where are we, Dominic?”
He walked slowly beside her for a few moments and then stopped and gazed down at her again. “It’s difficult to explain, but we’re in a place where few can go.”
That wasn’t exactly the answer she wanted. She peered around him and almost sighed in relief when she saw a window seat in the old library. What she was doing in the library’s reading room with a strange man, she didn’t know. At least she knew where she was now. A place where few can go? The library?
“Shall we sit?”
She nodded, not wanting to say something odd again. She let him lead her over to the window where he stood waiting until she sat down. She glanced out the window to see the large snowflakes falling gently to the ground. She tried not to notice how close he sat to her, but it was hard not to when the man was so large. She tried also not to notice how wide his shoulders were. Her biggest weakness seemed to be men with broad shoulders. Even though he was dressed in dark pants and a tasteful sweater, he seemed almost dangerous, and the well controlled female inside her liked this too much.
“What do you do, Jennah?”
She looked quickly from his broad shoulders to those dark eyes. “I, ah, work for the police department here in town.”
“A detective?”
She grinned and shook her head. “No, I thought about trying it a few times, but got too old to pursue it by the time I decided.”
He grinned. “I can’t see your age being the problem. You can’t be more than twenty-eight, twenty-nine.”
She knew she grinned at him like an infatuated idiot, but couldn’t help it. “Oh, I’m afraid I’m quite a bit older than that, but I’m going to take that as a compliment.” She fought the urge to brush her long, wavy hair back off her shoulder. She didn’t want to appear like she was flirting. She smiled at him again before looking back toward the window.
“I think you’re exaggerating. So, what do you do within the department?”
She shrugged. “Mostly desk work and gopher runs.”
He nodded. “What does that involve?”
“Transports, mostly.”
“To Wyestate prison?”
“Quite often, or to the court and next counties.” Jennah watched his eyes move over her face.
“Do you have a partner?”
She shook her head. “Not often, unless it’s a high profile I’m transporting.” She glanced at the clock on the wall and frowned. It must need repairing. It couldn’t possibly be almost five in the morning. “Are you from here?” She gazed around when she heard an odd buzzing, but couldn’t tell where it was coming from.
“No.” He just sat there, studying her.
She tried to focus on him and then blinked. He seemed to be fading.
“I’ll see you again, Jennah.”
The buzzing grew louder.
Jennah opened her eyes. Her alarm clock was going off. She reached over and slapped a hand on the snooze button and then focused to make sure she was in her room. She blew out a breath and tried to shake the fog from her mind. That explained a few things. The dream was so real, but not at the same time. Too bad, really. That man, Dominic, her mind had invented was quite nice to look at. No more chocolate caramel popcorn for you before bed, she thought as she slowly sat up.

Book Description:

Excerpt:
The nerve of that man! Why won’t he just accept things and go away? She paced back and forth, trying to control the frustration that was pumping through her. Every time she saw him, every hurt moment came flooding back to her and she just wanted him gone. She wanted to move on and live her own life and try her
damndest to be happy!
“Jennah?”
She spun around, expecting someone to be behind her. There was no one there. Was that Dominic’s voice? Oh no, she was hallucinating now! Should she call her doctor? Maybe the stress had finally caught up to her. Was she going to end up spending her holidays alone in the psych ward?
“Jennah, why are you so upset?”
She squeezed her eyes shut. I am not hearing voices! I am not losing my mind! She heard his deep chuckle. “No, you’re not losing your mind. This is really happening. I should have told you, but in our dream...it’s not really a dream. We’re connecting.”
Her eyes flew open. What? “What?” She stood perfectly still, waiting to see if she could hear him again.
“I can explain it better later. I just picked up on how upset you were...”
She squinted. “Picked up? How? How are you inside my head when I’m completely awake? How can we talk inside my head?”
She heard him chuckle again. “Inside mine, as well. I don’t have time right now. Are you all right?”
She laughed out loud, not knowing if he would hear it in her head too. “Clearly not! I’m talking to a man from my dream inside my head while I’m wide awake standing in the locker room at work!”
“Jennah...”

About the Author:

Jacqueline Paige lives in Ontario in a small town that’s part of the popular Georgian Triangle area.  No one has ever heard of Stayner, so she usually tells people she lives “near Collingwood” and no, she doesn’t ski at Blue Mountain or at all, in fact she’s not even fond of snow.
She began her writing career in 2006 and since her first published works in 2009 she hasn’t stopped.  Jacqueline describes her writing as “all things paranormal”, which she has proven is her niche with stories of witches, ghosts, physics and shifters now on the shelves.
When Jacqueline isn’t working at her ‘reality job’ or lost in her writing she spends time with her five children, most of whom are finally able to look after her instead of the other way around.  Together they do random road trips, that usually end up with them lost,  shopping trips where they push every button in the toy aisle, hiking when there’s enough time to escape and bizarre things like creating new daring recipes in the kitchen. She’s a grandmother to four (so far) and looks forward to corrupting many more in the years to come.

We have a guest post today from author Paula Altenburg!

Ten Ways to End Up in My Demon Outlaws Novels
By Paula Altenburg

At parties or social gatherings, if people find out I write, I’m usually asked one of two questions—sometimes, both.

“Where do you come up with story ideas?” and my favorite, “Am I going to end up in one of your novels?”

I write paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and fantasy, so the answer to the first question is really quite simple. I read a lot, both fiction and non-fiction, and I have an overactive imagination. A degree in social anthropology helps.

All I do is take a piece of information and then I make s!#t  up. To me, it’s fairly straightforward.

As for how to end up in one of my novels, that question’s a little trickier. As I said, I write paranormal and fantasy. You’d have to lead an unusual and interesting lifestyle to end up in one of my stories. I’m sorry, but getting drunk at a party isn’t all that out -of-the-ordinary. Funny as hell sometimes, but not really book-worthy unless you’re a crack smoking mayor of Toronto and I’ve got that one in the works.

Therefore, I’ve compiled a list of things the true attention-seeker desperate to become an integral part of my next plotting session can do. If you’ve accomplished any of the following feats, I truly wish to hear from you. (As will the National Enquirer, People, and Us magazines.)

So here they are:

1.      1.  Become a demon hunter—or better yet, a demon
Women love, love, love reading about men who are “larger than life. As an FYI, however, in real life demons and demon hunters don’t seem to attract as large a following as one might expect.

2.      2.  Travel to the demon boundary and live to tell about it
If you can survive this vacation, you are most definitely going to end up in my novel.

3.      3.  Make becoming an assassin seem like an honorable career choice
I’m not sure why this is frowned on in our society. It just needs to be a better managed program. Maybe we could have a voting system as to who should drink poison. Didn’t the ancient Greeks do something like this?

4.       4. Cut off all access to the outside world and name yourself ruler
That didn’t work out so well for a few world leaders so maybe approach that one with caution.

5.       5. Build an entire world that runs on magic
And when I say build, I mean that. Literally.

6.       6. Destroy an entire world that has become a battleground for immortals—in fact, be one of the occupying immortals
While being immortal sounds attractive, I’d like to point out that it rarely turns out well for characters in stories. It makes them the targets of mortals who want to prove they aren’t invincible, or of other immortals who want to cut off their heads and claim their abilities. I doubt if they get much sleep. I’d only consider this if I were an insomniac.  And destroying the world would seem counter-productive to immortals with common sense. Where are they supposed to live? Who are they going to terrorize? But I guess being an immortal means you really don’t have to be good at planning ahead.

7.       7. Become a goddess’s boy-toy
This one sounds like a lot of fun if you’re a guy. Apparently, however, some guys have weird self-esteem issues over this one. Not my heroes. They’re comfortable in their masculinity.

8.       8. Be able to cross deserts and climb mountains without proper survival gear
Let’s face it. Main characters in fiction are rarely well-prepared for wilderness survival, and yet they always seem to make it. If you can do this, you are most definitely story material.

9.      9. Be able to shift into a cross between Hell-Boy and the Hulk
At first, you might not think this is sexy. But trust me, it is. Very much so.

1    10. Walk through demon fire—without protective fire-fighting gear
Unless it’s part of your anatomy, Firefighters need not apply. If you’re impervious to demon fire, however, I’m interested.

This isn’t an exclusive list by any means. And of course, I’m always willing to talk about writing. Therefore, if I meet you at a party and you have an awesome supernatural ability, or an evil tendency to take over worlds, please feel free to discuss it with me.

I will gladly put you in my next Demon Outlaws novel.

Book Description:

Passionate and headstrong, half-demon Raven is nearly executed on the orders of her fundamentalist stepfather. She escapes from the burning stake using the gifts of her otherworldly heritage and the help of a mortal stranger named Blade. Now she’s set on revenge, and only quiet, intense Blade stands in her way.
A retired assassin weary of the weight of his past, Blade has crossed the desert to seek out a new life. His journey is interrupted when his conscience demands he help Raven find an old friend who can help her. Saving her from her need for revenge and delivering her into the hands of loved ones means he’s one step closer to redemption.
But as Blade’s sense of duty becomes something more and threats, both mortal and immortal, stalk the woman he can’t abandon, he could very well fall back into the life he’s trying so hard to escape.

Book Spotlight: Chasing Victory

Chasing Victory is my debut novel which was recently released at the end of March. It is a paranormal, romantic suspense and the first book in The Winters Sisters Series. There is a thread that runs through this series, and that is to portray my love of the Doberman. I have owned and loved this amazing breed for thirty years and truly believe they are a breed unto themselves. Their intelligence, commitment, dedication, tenacity, and unconditional love can only be experienced by living with this great animal.

As I began writing my first draft of Chasing Victory, Dax weighed heavily on my mind. It was that moment I decided dobermans would be part of the Winters sisters family and each sister would have their own dog.

The Doberman on the cover of Chasing Victory is Dax. The picture was taken over ten years ago by my friend Denise. Dax and my husband, Ralph were a team unto themselves --

In the year of acquiring his Companion Dog title (CD), Dax was the Doberman Pinscher Club of America’s (DPCA), Highest Scoring Dog earning a CD and placed first in his class at the DPCA National. He also placed first in his class in agility at the DPCA National. He was the first in his litter to achieve an AKC breed championship, and the first to be awarded a DPCA Register of Merit. In 2001 Dax was tied for the number 3 Novice Doberman in the US for Agility in Front and Finish Magazine. Two months after we lost him, we learned that he was rated number 6 doberman in AKC Novice Agility.

Chasing Victory Blurb:
Doctor Doolittle in female form creates X-Men on steroids. Murder, kidnapping, and blackmail follow as world-renowned geneticist Victory Winters is forced to pursue her research on canine DNA. Victory is kidnapped and taken to a satellite facility of Biotec, owned by a shadow conglomerate known as The Kaleidoscope Group. To her horror she is presented with human test subjects, two military men who have been injected with this foreign DNA.
Tristan Farraday is a naval officer assigned to a clandestine division of the armed forces, known as SOCOM; Special Operations Command. His primary goal is to expose the players behind a plot to create indestructible soldiers and to secure this research at all costs.
Victory is suspicious and untrusting of Tristan because their initial friendship was built on lies. However, she realizes that in order to save herself and her family she will need his help, and Tristan goes undercover as her research assistant. Working together they fight to save the men injected with the foreign DNA. While inside the Biotec compound Tristan attempts to contact Wyatt telepathically, but is unable to reach him due to a hi-tech security grid. Tristan stumbles upon the fact that Victory has her own telepathic abilities, along with a rare gift of being an amplifier–someone who enhances others’ abilities. Victory is not aware nor does she believe that she possess these abilities. They rebuild their friendship, and as the danger surrounding them escalates, the passion between the two ignites.
Excerpt from Chasing Victory:

“Yeah, well there goes our only real lead.” Tristan hissed while taking in his surroundings, trying to get a read on what had taken place. “There it is again.”

“What?” Wyatt answered.

“Shhh,” Tristan responded. “I’m not talking to you.”

Flaring his nostrils widely to fill his lungs with the odors surrounding him, Tristan took in several deep breaths, each time filling his lungs more deeply. He closed his eyes and focused on his breathing. The scent from a person will travel in the wind forming a scent cone; these scents are picked up by bloodhounds, and Tristan. He had caught that same scent while tracking Jeffery through the forest. He knew Jeffery’s scent and that wasn’t the only scent cone he was detecting.

Old Spice and sweat, accompanied with the distinct odor of cigarette smoke still lingered, along with scents that were uniquely human, stress and testosterone. These stenches littered the area, and underneath them all, the strong scent of cordite given off by the gun and the blood soaked ground. It was highly possible that those were the scents of Jeffery’s killers. He turned slightly to his right and picked up another scent cone. It was weak, but it was there. Without thinking he moved with his eyes still closed, off towards the right. Lavender and chamomile. Someone else was here, a woman. By the weakness of her fragrance, Tristan surmised that she could not have been as close to the action. He stood motionless, letting the odors of the ghastly scene penetrate his every pore. He opened his eyes and continued walking, the lavender and chamomile growing stronger with each step. He walked about sixty feet, when he found a patch of bent and broken ferns. It was a small depression, but the lavender-and-chamomile woman had definitely been lying among the ferns. Crouching down into the depression, Tristan looked back to where Jeffery laid. He could barely see Jeffery and he was sure whoever was laying here could not have heard or seen anything, except the gunshot that had ended Jeffery’s life.
