A Sons of Kane Novel
Book Two

Charles Wright has found the perfect way to trap the man threatening his brother's wife: cozy up to him, get invited along on the skiing trip, and then search for incriminating evidence. How much better that audacious but gorgeous Rachel is just as eager to nail the bastard. As far as he's concerned, there's nothing wrong with a little blackmail between two consenting adults. Especially when it's time for Rachel to pay up.

DON’T BITE THE BRIDESMAID
A Sons of Kane Novel
Book One
Tiffany Allee

Genre:  Light Paranormal Romance
Publisher: Entangled Publishing (Covet)
Length: Novel
Release Date: May 27, 2013

About the book:
Alice Shepard needs one thing: a date for her sister’s wedding. And not just any date. A hunk who will make her fiancé rue the day he left her for her best friend. Her drop-dead gorgeous neighbor fits the bill—even if he is a bit quirky and never comes out during the day—and Alice has downed just enough appletinis to ask him. But she makes it quite clear that there will be no funny business.

Spending a week on a cruise ship full of humans while sleeping close to his sexy next-door neighbor sounds like a helluva bad idea to vampire Noah Thorpe. But his friends need time to get him out of a shotgun wedding—a vampire bonding that will tie his fate to a female vampire he’s never met. And Alice’s offer comes at just the right time.
What could possibly go wrong?

Author Blog & Giveaway: Mostly Magic by Donna June Cooper

Mostly Magic
The Kindling Series
Book Two
Donna June Cooper

Publisher – Samhain
Publication date – June 3, 2014
Genre – Contemporary Paranormal Romance
Cover – by Kanaxa aka Nathalie Gray

About the Book:
One terrifying premonition brings them together. Another will threaten their future.

Do dreams come true? Dr. Daniel Woodruff hopes they don't, because his dreams predict a devastating future for him, for those he loves—and for the planet.

His latest premonition, which blows a huge crater in his eroding sanity, holds a singular horror—the loss of a wife and unborn child. Yet another reason he can let no one into his chaotic life, least of all a perky, persistent investigative reporter he finds simultaneously frustrating and fascinating.

Mel Noblett leaves no stone unturned in her one-woman crusade to save the environment. When a whistleblower in Italy proves too frightened to talk, Mel turns to a fall-back lead, an extremely eccentric, beekeeping professor who might just make the trip worthwhile.

Despite their instant attraction, Mel is relieved when Daniel keeps her at arm’s length. After all, she has a secret of her own—one that makes her preternaturally good at her job. And, when Daniel’s terrifying visions prove cannily accurate and begin to revolve around Mel—it is a gift that could put her life in danger.

Warning: Reluctant seer of a bleak future meets petite force of nature who lights up the heart of his darkness. Where there’s smoke, there could be an unpredictable blaze of passion, but the rewards are oh, so sweet…

We are thrilled to bring you a guest post by Donna June. Enjoy~
There are two things that are essential to my writing process, one is music, the other is visuals—photos, maps, blueprints. And of course, for visuals, I use Pinterest.  I am continually pinning things, for already published books, for books under construction, and for books that are just wisps of idea.

For this book, Mostly Magic, there was such a rich cache of visual images to play with. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Settings

First, Florence, or Firenze, Italia. Talk about a rich cache. This is my very favorite city in all the world and all I can give you on my Pinterest board is a taste.  This particular taste is of the terrace at the top of the Hotel Loggiato dei Serviti that plays a key role in the book. I actually had a discussion with an editor who was familiar with Florence and didn't think you could see Il Duomo from that room. This is when the internet is your friend. As you can see, you really can see Il Duomo from that room.

Second, another rich source of visual images—Scarborough Renaissance Festival—which, although brief, plays a bit of a role in the book. I have spent many lovely hours at this particular faire. Great fun plus costumes and finger food! These lovely fairies were captured by Artist at Play wearing outfits just a tad skimpier than Mel's (the heroine's) usual garb when assisting her magician father. If you have never been to a Renaissance faire, give it a try. You might run into a prince!

Characters

And of course, the characters. Some readers prefer to picture the characters for themselves, which is why my Pinterest boards have warning screens so you don't have to see the characters if you don't want to. So, *WARNING*, if you don't want to see the characters as I visualize them in my head, you might want to skip this part.

As you can tell if you explore my Pinterest boards, there is no one individual who absolutely matches my visual of any of my Mostly Magic characters. I have to say though, that when I wrote Daniel Woodruff in the very first book of the series, I saw someone who looked a lot like Orlando Bloom in my head. Tall, lanky, long dark hair, and with what I call that "I-can-see-things-you-can't-see-and -I-don't-want-to" look. Yum.

Then there was Mel. I could never find really close to the Mel I had in my head. KaNaXa, the wonderful cover artist for Mostly Magic, gives us just a hint of Keira Knightley with intense blue eyes in her rendition of Mel. Another option is the irrepressible Jennifer Lawrence, whose hair and eyes and personality would come very close to our petite force-of-nature, Mel.

Origami, as you can probably tell from the cover, plays a key role in the book. (And yes, I know, it is such a funny and suggestive word!) Mel creates origami figures for her father's magic show and for relaxation. These little green fellows are her favorites for handing out at her father's magic shows, and for distracting adorable eccentric scientists. In addition, there is a You Tube link on my Pinterest board that shows you how to make a jumping frog out of a playing card, just as Mel does in the book.

As you can see, research for writing a romance can be fun and educational. I hope you enjoyed this little foray through the images in my head!

About the Author:
A transplanted mountain girl. As the granddaughter of a coal miner and the great-great-granddaughter of one of the Muscogee people, Donna was raised in the shadows of the Appalachian Mountains - in the beautiful hills of East Tennessee. After getting a couple of college degrees, she was lured away from her mountains by a gorgeous Italian guy, who married her and carried her off to Texas. (Texas, by comparison to her mountains, is very hot and very flat—a fact she points out often to whoever will listen.) Her vocations have included a little bit of everything, including a stint as an IRS tax auditor, a few years managing a bookstore, and a career in the corporate world writing technical courseware and documentation, but her avocation was always writing. She enjoys being walked by her Jack Russell Terrier (if you know Jack's, you understand), belly dancing (excellent exercise and lots of shiny costumes), reading (three books at once, at times), and travel (with family in Italy and England, who wouldn't?) But, like any child of the Appalachians, she doesn’t stay away from her mountains for long, and visits as often as she can.

Guest Blog & Giveaway: Blood and Magic by Ann Gimpel

Blood and Magic
Ann Gimpel

Publisher: Taliesin
Genre: Dark Paranormal Romance

Book Description:
Can Luke conquer his past and claim the only woman he’s ever loved?

Magic didn’t just find Luke Caulfield. It chased him down, bludgeoned him, and has been dogging him ever since. Some lessons are harder than others. Luke survives by embracing danger and upping the ante to give it one better. An enforcer for the Coven, a large, established group of witches, his latest assignment is playing bodyguard to the daughter of Coven leaders.

Abigail Ruskin is chaperoning a spoiled twelve-year-old from New York to her parents’ home in Utah Territory when Luke gets on their stagecoach in Colorado. A powerful witch herself, Abigail senses Luke’s magic, but he’s so overwhelmingly male, she shies away from contact. Stuck between the petulant child and Luke’s raw sexual energy, Abigail can’t wait for the trip to end.

Wraiths, wolves, and humans with dark magick attack. Unpleasant truths surface about the child and Abigail’s well-ordered world crashes around her. Luke’s so attracted to Abigail, she’s almost all he can think about, but he’s leery too. In over his head, he summons enforcer backup. Will they help him save the woman he’s falling in love with, or demand her immediate execution?

PRFL would like to extend a very warm welcome to our guest blogger, Ann Gimple, author of Blood and Magic, and so many other great books.

Creating a Setting for Your Characters

Thanks so much for inviting me back to your blog, Danica. That’s the best compliment of all. Hope your writing is going well and that 2014 is the best year yet—for all of us.
I’d love to say I use the same process for every book I write, but I don’t. Many of my books begin with an image, or series of images, that form the basis for the book. I occasionally begin with an empty world, and it tells me what kind of characters it needs. I’ve only rarely begun with a character and formed a world around them.
In Blood and Magic, the world came to me first. It was a nineteenth century version of the United States that’s become a battlefield. People with power stand on one side, and wraiths and other dark creatures stand on the other. I needed gutsy, self-contained characters to survive in such a challenging environment, and they came to me.
Luke starts out as a scared fifteen year old. His mother’s been taken by wraiths and his father sent him to find the town wizard to help them. Luke knows he has magic, but it scares the living daylights out of him. In many ways this is his story as he comes to terms with who he is. Abigail enters the stage after Luke is long past grown. She’s a powerful witch, but not a match for what’s after them. The story arc brings Luke and Abigail together, but it’s a long, tough journey.
One of the things I love about urban fantasy, as opposed to high fantasy, is it’s set in the “real” world. No odd names for things. No triple moons transiting the sky. My favorite urban fantasies feel so real, they could actually happen. That hunk living next door could be a closet Celtic god, who’s really been alive for millennia.
I’m also wretchedly old-fashioned. We lost something when our lives got very easy. There’s not much challenge left anymore, unless we create it. I think that’s why I’ve had a lifelong love affair with traveling the backcountry with a pack, where I have to rely on my wits. I’ve been cold, lost, and out of food, but I feel ever so much more alive when I get back to civilization. I give my characters similar challenges. They need wits, creativity, and courage to survive to the next chapter. That their worlds hold surprises ups the ante.

How about the rest of you writers out there. Do you create characters first, or worlds? Or do they come to you as a unit that refuses to be separated?

Thank you so much for joining us today, Ann. We really enjoyed the visit and the insights. Good luck and great sales with Blood and Magic!

About the Author

Ann Gimpel is a mountaineer at heart. Recently retired from a long career as a psychologist, she remembers many hours at her desk where her body may have been stuck inside four walls, but her soul was planning yet one more trip to the backcountry. Around the turn of the last century (that would be 2000, not 1900!), she managed to finagle moving to the Eastern Sierra, a mecca for those in love with the mountains. It was during long backcountry treks that Ann’s writing evolved. Unlike some who see the backcountry as an excuse to drag friends and relatives along, Ann prefers solitude. Stories always ran around in her head on those journeys, sometimes as a hedge against abject terror when challenging conditions made her fear for her life, sometimes for company. Eventually, she returned from a trip and sat down at the computer. Three months later, a five hundred page novel emerged. Oh, it wasn’t very good, but it was a beginning. And, she learned a lot between writing that novel
and its sequel.

Around that time, a friend of hers suggested she try her hand at short stories. It didn’t take long before that first story found its way into print and they’ve been accepted pretty regularly since then. One of Ann’s passions has always been ecology, so her tales often have a green twist.

In addition to writing, Ann enjoys wilderness photography. She lugs pounds of camera equipment in her backpack to distant locales every year. A standing joke is that over ten percent of her pack weight is camera gear which means someone else has to carry the food! That someone is her husband. They’ve shared a life together for a very long time. Children, grandchildren and three wolf hybrids round out their family.

Sent to supply her unique magical arrows to help the humans, she is far from free.

The elf king and queen have sent a bodyguard, a fearsome warrior whose reputation has no rival. The only man she has ever wanted. Einar of Glengowyn.

Einar is known as a battle-crazed destroyer, so feared among elves he’s called by a single name: Darkness. And he has only one weakness—Nuala. Their union is forbidden, for melding their magics could destroy Nuala’s gifts. Yet as they journey to the war-torn city, no royal decree is a match for two hundred years of pent-up desire.

But even if they escape the war zone, their lives still hang in the balance. They must confront their sovereigns and prove love makes them stronger—or face their deaths.

Product Warnings:  This book contains a deadly elf hero, a heroine who’s his match, a lot of sexy misbehaving, some hard language, racing through the streets, owls, arrows, evil Sorcerers, wicked minions, and a very dangerous elf king and queen.

PRFL is thrilled to offer you some thoughts from author Isabo Kelly. Enjoy!

Why Epic Fantasy Romance?
For those who might not know, epic fantasy romances are fantasy stories that take place in worlds that aren’t Earth (this is as opposed to Urban Fantasy or Paranormal which are Earth-based fantasy stories). I often tell people to think Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones. But I always want to include the warning that the genre is much more diverse than just those two worlds, so don’t let that limit your idea of what epic fantasy can be. A lot of it will really appeal to paranormal romance readers. My Fire and Tears series is a case in point.
So why do I write epic fantasy? Because I LOVE making stuff up. Seriously, that’s my prime motivating factor. In epic fantasy, I get to make everything up as I go along. I’m a mad crazy world-builder, and for this particular subgenre, the only thing I really have to do is make sure I’m consistent and that my world feels real enough that readers aren’t thrown out of it. Otherwise, my imagination is the limit.
That’s just too much fun to resist. *g*
I write epic fantasy romance so I can play. It’s a little like being a professional athlete—I’m being paid to play! (Okay, I’m not paid nearly as much as most pro athletes but hey, I can pretend! After all, that’s what I’m good at—pretending.)
Also, I love swords and bow and arrows. I know, I know, I could incorporate those into a paranormal or urban fantasy (and I do when I write those if the story lets me), but when I think swords and bows, I think epic fantasy so that’s where my imagination goes.
And that’s why I write epic fantasy romance—playtime, make-believe worlds, and the weaponry. Oh and elves! I love elves.
So what kinds of “fantasy” elements do you like in stories? I love dragons too! I just don’t have any in this current series. Yet… *g*

Thank you, Isabo!

PRFL would like to extend a very warm welcome to Anya Breton, author of The Only Sorceress. Anya, to begin, can you tell us where you're from, and where/whom did your love for writing come from?
I’m a yankee living in Indiana. I fell in love with historical romances after happening on one at a babysitting job. Reading loads of those turned into trying my hand at writing. But I don’t have the patience to do historical (all that research!).

Can you say that your journey to publication was difficult? If so, what were the hardest moments to get through?
I wouldn’t say it was difficult. The journey simply took a lot of time, effort, and patience. The hardest moments are when edits came back with errors I should have spotted. And marketing. I’m shy and don’t like to ask people for stuff ;)

How do you overcome i-suck-it is, that little voice in your head that tells you your writing isn’t good enough?
Sometimes stepping away for a few hours helps. With how fast and how much my writing has improved over the past three years, it’s easier to tell that little voice to shove it.

What is your dream vacation?
A laptop with Wi-Fi on a warm beach, plus my Kindle and alcohol beverages. For at least a month.

Describe your writing style in five words.
Sexy with side of nerdy.

What movies are you currently excited to see?
The Other Woman.

What are you currently reading?
The Divergent Series.

If you weren’t a writer, what other careers would you pursue?
Something artsy. Or I’d be a professor/teacher.

If you could create a holiday of your own, what would it be called?
“International reading & chocolate day” in which it’s mandatory to read at least one book and eat at least one piece of chocolate (unless health issues preclude).

For people who haven’t read your novel, how would you summarize the plot?
Kora must infiltrate coven leadership or her mother will let her nemesis have her eternal soul. (That’s actually the summary for the series)

What are two of your pet-peeves?
I drive a lot, so one is people who drive slowly in the passing lane. The other would be intolerance.

To you, what makes a good story?
Romance, especially when the heroine and hero fight in the beginning.

What usually turns you off about a story?
Female rivals.

If you could collaborate with any author, who would you choose, and why?
Christina Dodd because I love just about everything she releases.

What is on your night stand?
My iPhone+dock, a bottle of water, and Editor cat (it’s nearly her dinner time).

What is your favorite book?
Phantom by Susan Kay. It covers the Phantom of the Opera’s early and later years. We discover his loveless upbringing and disastrous relationships along the way to Paris. I rarely reread a story but I’ve read this one a few times and adore it each time.

Thanks so much for hosting me!! <3 - Anya

Thank you so much for joining us today, Anya! We really enjoyed the visit. Good luck and great sales with The Only Sorceress!

Excerpt:
She bent to pick up the receipt she’d dropped, and then yelped at the sight of the stranger six feet from her. She blew her fright away on an exhale and put her hand to her heart.
Why did they always frighten her? By now, she should have been used to strange men approaching her. Sometimes they heckled her—the “little girl” truck driver. Occasionally, they tried to sell her things. Dick and weed, mostly. One she didn’t partake in. The other she sure as shit wasn’t going to pay for, even if she were that kind of desperate.
She rolled her eyes and shook her head, hoping he’d catch the drift. Not that they ever did. Bozos.
“Cold night, isn’t it?” he asked. His voice was deep and cultured in the way Shakespearean actors’ voices were. Trained. Odd, seeing as how the only culture this guy had likely rubbed off from the newspapers he slept on. She cocked her head to the side and really studied him. Maybe he was experiencing some sort of delusion and believed he was on the set of a BBC miniseries or something. Maybe a modern retelling of The Taming of the Shrew. She knew which character she’d be cast as, and was already gearing up to play the role if he said something sufficiently stupid. And he would. There was always something wrong with these truck stop guys. Pity, because this one was hot. He had to be around six and a half feet tall, and a nicely proportionate breadth to go with that height. Not bulky, but there were definitely some muscles beneath that jacket. He had to outweigh her by a good hundred pounds.
He fixed a stare on her she couldn’t tell was from blue or gray eyes beneath the pole light, but either way, it was oddly mesmerizing. She couldn’t bring herself to break free of it, although it somehow made her feel exposed.
  Naked.
Why was he looking at her like that—like he knew her? She’d never seen the man before. She certainly would have remembered those startling eyes and all that dark hair. Jesus, she liked a bit of mane on her men. Someone could slap him on the cover of a romance novel. Just wrap him in tartan, hand him a sword, and set up an unobtainable fantasy for a few thousand women.
She pursed her lips, considering him. Nah, she’d read probably a hundred thrift store romance novels in the past year, and this guy was too tan to be a Scotsman and not dark enough to be a sheikh. Greek tycoon, maybe? Oh yeah. Put him on the deck of a yacht wearing some of those little European swim trunks and—
“Isn’t it?” he repeated, and raised one dark eyebrow.
“Huh?” She blinked. Did he want something?
He shifted his weight and shoved his hands into the pockets of his leather jacket, grinning at her. Shit, he could have lit up the entire parking lot with that smile. He was so pretty—now, what did he want with her? Whatever it was, she wasn’t paying for it.
She closed her eyes and drew in a bolstering breath. “It’s cold,” she said blandly and hauled her toolbox up into her truck cab.
“Montana’s a pretty inhospitable place, huh? There’s still a month until winter, but I don’t think the snow cares about timeliness.”
“Mm-hmm.” She patted her pockets in search of her keys. The next thing he’d probably say was that he could make it a lot more hospitable for her, if she had enough cash.
Prostitutes were pretty predictable, and she certainly got propositioned enough, though usually the truck stop hos were a little less—upright.
But, shit, did she really look like the kind of woman who’d pay a man for sex? She wrapped her fingers around the handle, prepared to slam the door.
He moved closer and grabbed the door’s edge before she could pull it. “Hey, why don’t you let me buy you a cup of coffee? You look like you could use a cup.”
  “I don’t think so, dude.”
She could afford her own coffee, obviously, but no prostitute had ever offered to buy her anything. Must have been a new sales strategy—the hook ’em, then hump ’em.
She just wanted to get back on the road, but he was right. She did need to refill her thermos, fiend that she was. Coffee was her one vice, and she’d forgotten to take the canister into the restaurant with her during dinner. She didn’t want to give the guy the satisfaction, though, no matter how good he looked.
She let her gaze fall on him once again. He looked harmless enough, with his easy stance and hands jammed into the pockets of his coat. His boots were actually quite good quality. Brown leather with some scuffs. Broken in, and wet from snow, but they looked damned expensive. Didn’t seem like hand-me-downs, either. The heels were too good.
There must have been good money in truck stop whoring.
“No, thank you,” she finally managed, and gripped the door handle again after two failed attempts. “I-I need to get back on the road and get this load delivered.”
