Series Spotlight: Son of Dragons by Andrea Cooper

Son of Dragons
Legends of Oblivion Series
Book 2
Andrea Cooper

Genre: Fantasy Romance
Publisher: Crimson Romance

About the Book
In a time of false peace, the dead rise as soldiers for the Warloc’s scheme. For thousands of years he has stood ready for the final battle. Though the witch and her cursed Elvin have destroyed his physical body, now with his protégé, he has honed a new way to wage war.

Shunned by her own people and weary-hearted from centuries of lost loves, Elvin warrior Mirhana scours the land to silence the undead. Her heart has turned as cold as the sword she wields, until a prince seeks her aid.

Never has Prince Landon met a woman like Mirhana. Both beautiful and deadly, she haunts his dreams. The battle at hand becomes more enchanting than fighting to remain true to his unseen betrothed.

When a traitor emerges, new alliances are tested and the only remaining hope is to follow the prophecy and find the ... Son of Dragons.

Excerpt:
Clean from the bath, Landon let the air from the open window dry his hair. Dressed only in trousers, he leaned against the windowsill.
He thought he smelled the hint of roses and heat on the breeze. Movement from the street below caught his eye. He leaned out, squinting into the night.
Torches lined the cobbled street corners. A cloaked figure waited. Then the innkeeper rushed outside. His hands flew in gestures as the figure nodded.
Then he pointed to the window where Landon watched. At the same instant, the cloaked figure followed his finger’s path to Landon. Green eyes that seemed to glow met his.
Landon jumped up and cursed when his head hit the bottom of the window. When he looked back, both figures were gone.
Thinking the innkeeper would send guards, he waited with his sword in hand and his stare riveted on the door. No one came. He must be getting paranoid, thinking there was a ghost or enemy around every corner. His eyelids grew heavy as he waited for a fight that failed to materialize. Finally, he rolled his shoulders back to ease out the tension.
Still, he couldn’t stop thinking about those piercing emerald eyes. They’d belonged to a woman; he could tell. There was intelligence and
cunning in them. Her stare felt as though she saw through the façade he often wore as prince and to please others, and into his kajh.
A woman who was not afraid, but used to being feared. It unnerved him, yet excited him. His pulse quickened and his loins tightened at the thought of those eyes filled with passion for him.
Better get some sleep before the night was gone. Tomorrow, he’d tell Gillespie about what he saw. He doubted he could explain those captivating green eyes that continued to haunt him even now.

Reviews:
“We are introduced to new and wonderful creatures, and meet up with those we know and love from the first book, as each character's unique role and journey begins to intersect... and each will have a pivotal role in the outcome of an epic battle that is about to take place. Deception, self discovery, and sacrifices will be made, as each character's true role is uncovered... and in these magical lands, nothing is at it seems…Still, the book builds on the last with new and enchanting worlds, exciting creatures, and breathtaking originality. ..A really fun read, and a complimentary addition to the Legends of Oblivion series!” 4 1/2 stars Moonrise Book Blog

About the Book:
Everyone knows what happens when a vampire bites a human…but what if the victim is Elvin?
Forbidden to cross the Elvin barrier into human lands, Brock cannot sate his curiosity. Cursed by a vampyre bite that forces him to feed on the life-essence of others, he is unable to touch another without taking their life. Chained by prophesy, he must find a witch, pierce her heart, and draw her blood for his cure.

Celeste must escape the monks who have held her prisoner for years. Her magic has been kept dormant by her captors. An ancient powerful Warloc craves her powers. If he succeeds in devouring her magic, she and his world will die.

When Brock falls in love with Celeste before realizing her demise is his cure, will love triumph over his desire to be healed? Will he risk everything to save her from a Warloc, an oath breaker, who also wants her dead?

Excerpt:
I’ve known death. For over half a millennia, I escorted many to death at the end of my sword. In the eyes of the dying, I watched it shroud them. Foolishly, I thought many more eras would pass before death came for me. It came so swiftly that I could not run; I could not escape. At a village, dressed in human clothes, I took in everything.
I delayed my return to my people as I watched human jugglers bounce torches and knifes. It was autumn equinox and the festivities would continue well into the night. Children laughed as they chased each other. A trail of leaves from their costumes twirled after them. It was dark when I reached the forest.
A gasp rustled through the trees.
I hiked slower than my normal speed, so as not to startle whatever human called out. My leather boots crunched upon dried, diseased leaves and bark. Horrified, I glanced up. Branches twisted around each other to suffocating. Lifeless limbs cracked in the wind. Flesh of the trees sloughed off in layers, exposing its bones. Gashes hollowed out chunks of warmth. Fragments of leaves clung to finger tips, marking sepulchers of the dying trees. Trees mourned with wails like splitting wood, and I brought my hands over my ears. I must flee before I became infected, they told me. Flee before the stain of this defilement creeps into you, they warned. Trees spoke to my kind, always had. Yet these trees were in such agony of death that I could not breathe. Felt as though my lungs had folded in on themselves, like a moth unable to break loose from its cocoon.

Cursed in Shadow
Legends of Oblivion Series
Book 1.5
Andrea Cooper

Genre: Fantasy Romance
Publisher: Crimson Romance

About the Book
Cursed in Shadow is the continuation of The Garnet Dagger, Book 1 Legends of Oblivion series. This novelette bridges Book 1 and Son of Dragons, Book 2.

After defeating the Warloc, Brock, the Elvin Vampyre, takes Celeste to Tamlon to search the prophecies of the four and the Son of Dragons. However, the Elvin city is not safe, even for his witch.

The Warloc’s protégé is bent on his physical return to the living. Her necromancy brings forth Brock’s first victim and more.

Brock and Celeste must defeat prejudice and power to continue their journey and find Brock’s twin sister, Mirhana.

Excerpt:
When I rose, the two guards sidestepped away. Nay, they would not gamble their lives again by being within my reach.
Thankfully, since rescuing Celeste from the oak cave had taken all night, Shadowdancer was rested for the ride back to Tamlon.
With Celeste’s wounds slathered with yarroway and other healing plants, she mounted. Then Emillya climbed up behind her.
At least one Elvin besides me did not hate humans. If Emillya didn’t like humans, or Celeste for that matter, she wouldn’t speak to her much less ride on a horse with her. I ran alongside them while Celeste and Emillya talked. One guard raced on the opposite side of Shadowdancer, the other in front. And it appeared the horse gave the Elvin a race.
The Elvin were considerate enough to let Shadowdancer canter or walk whenever he tired. How they understood that running the horse too long too fast would be the end of him I do not know. There have never been horses in Elvin lands for as long as I can remember.
We all took turns getting Celeste to talk to us about her cave adventure; she must stay awake awhile longer, even though we could all see she fought to keep her eyes open.
“As soon as you’ve rested,” Emillya told her, glowering at my constant interruptions to translate, “you need to view the prophecies of the four. Nivel gave me instructions when he left with Brock. The library vaults await unchanged. He told me you’d come back after banishing the Warloc to the underworld.
“Hopefully, Brock hasn’t caused unrealized damage by the oak magic trapping you.”
I nearly stumbled at her words. How was I to know snares waited to spring upon humans in our land? Our kind was immune.
Just as I opened my mouth to voice my argument, Celeste smiled at me. Her grey eyes held a glimmer of her merriment, and my frown eased.
With a chuckle, I turned back to the path. Celeste was safe now. And that was all that mattered.
“We’ll make camp at dark.” Emillya patted Shadowdancer’s rump. “Should make Tamlon soon. It’s a fine horse—any other I fear would take us three or four nights to return.”
“That reminds me.” I said. “How did you get to the labyrinth so soon? The journey from Tamlon is longer than the time of Celeste’s entrapment.”
“We have a secret path Nivel created. It’s ancient magic and travels Elvin here within an hour.”
“Then let’s take this path back.” Celeste said.
“It’s only for Elvin. The magic would crush a human and perhaps even a horse.”
“Perhaps your magic needs to be altered now.” Celeste smiled.
“Indeed.” Emillya answered. “I’ll mention the request to the elders.”
When we arrived in Tamlon, I hoped to show Celeste the wonders of my land. And bask in the sun naked with her.
After the others slept, I laid down beside Celeste. She turned and snuggled her head under my chin. “Your language is so beautiful. Almost like music with its rhythms and melody.”
My hand traced circles up and down her back. “Emir voulan sptrea.”
“What does that mean?”
I eased her chin up and she looked into my eyes. “We are one heart.” I kissed her and relished in the sweetness of her mouth for we could do little else with company.

“I loved the first book in the series, The Garnet Dagger! Cursed in Shadow is equally spellbinding! I was awestruck by the world building, and thoroughly enjoyed seeing where the characters would take us. A fantastic tale, with a charming love story entwined, this is a must read for anyone who enjoys escaping into a fantasy world where anything can happen!” 5 stars – Moonrise Book Blog
“Andrea did a fantastic job utilizing all the elements that she built into The Garnet Dagger to make this short do the work of a novella or maybe even a full length book. I’m eagerly anticipating the release of Sons of Dragons now!” 5 stars – Fantasy is More Fun

About the Author:

Growing up in Houston, Texas, Andrea has always created characters and stories. But it wasn't until she was in her late twenties that she started writing novels.
What happened that ignited the writing flame in her fingers? Divorced, and disillusioned by love songs and stories. They exaggerate. She thought. Love and Romance are not like that in the real world. Then she met her husband and realized, yes love and romance are exactly like the songs and stories say. She is now a happy wife, and a mom to three kids (two boys and a girl).
Andrea writes paranormal and historical romance. When not writing or reading, one may find Andrea dancing in Zumba. She believes in the power of change and counting each moment as a blessing. But most importantly, she believes in love.

IN THE SHADOW OF GREED: Amazon | BN | iTunes

PRFL would like to extend a very warm welcome to Nancy Weeks, author of In the Shadow of Malice. Nancy, to begin, can you tell us where you're from, and where/ fromwhom did your love for writing come?
I was raised in what is known as the Rio Grand Valley in the southern most point of Texas. My husband and I met at the University of Texas in Austin and moved the day after our wedding to Maryland where I have lived ever since.  As for where my love of writing came from, that’s an interesting story. I use to hate writing, especially research papers and essays. I started reading romance novels to escape homework. It took me several years before I discovered the absolute joy of writing down the stories that have lived in my head for years.

Can you say that your journey to publication was difficult?
I don’t think my journey to publication could be called difficult. I expected it to be a lot worse than it was. I made a lot of rookie mistakes querying my first manuscript before I discovered the amazing writing groups available in every shape and form.

How do you overcome I-suck-at-this, that little voice in your head that tells you your writing isn’t good enough?
I call ‘I-suck-at-this’ my doubt monster. It’s a persistent little bugger but I have to take control of it. It all boils down to having faith in myself. I know that if I don’t have faith in myself, how can I expect others to have faith in me? So, I yell at it daily, hourly to just shush it up. I push the doubt down and focus. I make myself write--keep my butt in the chair and my fingers on the keys. If a scene isn’t working, I sit there until it reads the way I think it should. Of course, my sweet mom, [my angel] is sitting on my shoulder whispering in my ear that I can do it!

What is your dream vacation?
There are so many places I would love to go, but all I really need is time alone with my sweet hubby. We take long car trips together and have such a great time. Last summer, we put almost 9000 miles on my new van. One great plus---I can write in the car!

Describe your writing style in five words.
Intense, intriguing, suspenseful, strong characters, and familial—my stories have a loving family support group surrounding my hero and heroine.

What movies are you currently excited to see?
I have spent the last four months living in my writer’s cave finishing the fourth book of my Shadow series. I’m in serious need of some down time. Honestly, I have no idea what’s coming out. I’m planning for Mother’s Day weekend to make a pan of homemade popcorn and watch ….something. Since Harry Potter is playing, I may just go through that series then watch the Lake House for the third time---then on to Captain America and the new Thor movie.  I seem to watch what I write.

What are you currently reading?
I’ve started two of my fellow Crimson Romance author’s books, Perfect Partners by Stephanie Cage and The Cavanaugh House by Elizabeth Meyette.

If you weren’t a writer, what other careers would you pursue?
This is a hard one. The one position I’m most proud of is being a stay-at-home mom to my son and daughter. It was a very hard decision to make but the best thing I could have done for them. As for what I wish I could have been---well, I’m living that dream.

If you could create a holiday of your own, what would it be called?
National Nap Day!

For people who haven’t read your series, how would you summarize the plot?
Each book in my Shadow series [In the Shadow of Greed, In the Shadow of Evil and In the Shadow of Malice] is stand-alone novel, but they all share a similar premise, the exploration of each brother’s journey to find his happy-ever-after. As law enforcement officers, the five brothers’ lives constantly intersect with the worst that mankind has to offer. While each brother feels his world is too dangerous to share with that one special woman, fate butts in and gives that extra hard push—and my heroes fall hard.
Falling in love for any one of the McNeil brothers isn’t your typical fall-in-love. It changes their understanding of the world. When the women they love are threatened, the brothers combine their talents and are relentless.

What are two of your pet-peeves?
This may not be a pet-peeve, but I hope there is a special hell for those who harm children, women and animals.

To you, what makes a good story?
I usually have no problem getting lost in the story, but what makes me keep turning the pages is great conflict and chemistry between the hero and heroine.

What usually turns you off about a story?
Honestly, I don’t believe in stories where two strangers go straight from flirting right into a heated sex scene before page five. Old friends, rivals, lost loves---yeah, that’s believable. Complete strangers….I just don’t see it.

If you could collaborate with any author, who would you choose, and why?
I’m taking the chicken way out of this question. There are just too many wonderful authors I would love to collaborate to even list here.

What is on your night stand?
My Kindle and a glass of water.

What is your favorite book?
I love so many books---too many to pick just one.

I had such a wonderful time being a guest on Paranormal Romance Fans for Life. Thank you again for hosting me. I would love to give away a digital copy of my latest release, In the Shadow of Malice to one commenter. So---please don’t be shy. Ask me anything.
((Hugs to all))

Excerpt:
She bent to pick up the receipt she’d dropped, and then yelped at the sight of the stranger six feet from her. She blew her fright away on an exhale and put her hand to her heart.
Why did they always frighten her? By now, she should have been used to strange men approaching her. Sometimes they heckled her—the “little girl” truck driver. Occasionally, they tried to sell her things. Dick and weed, mostly. One she didn’t partake in. The other she sure as shit wasn’t going to pay for, even if she were that kind of desperate.
She rolled her eyes and shook her head, hoping he’d catch the drift. Not that they ever did. Bozos.
“Cold night, isn’t it?” he asked. His voice was deep and cultured in the way Shakespearean actors’ voices were. Trained. Odd, seeing as how the only culture this guy had likely rubbed off from the newspapers he slept on. She cocked her head to the side and really studied him. Maybe he was experiencing some sort of delusion and believed he was on the set of a BBC miniseries or something. Maybe a modern retelling of The Taming of the Shrew. She knew which character she’d be cast as, and was already gearing up to play the role if he said something sufficiently stupid. And he would. There was always something wrong with these truck stop guys. Pity, because this one was hot. He had to be around six and a half feet tall, and a nicely proportionate breadth to go with that height. Not bulky, but there were definitely some muscles beneath that jacket. He had to outweigh her by a good hundred pounds.
He fixed a stare on her she couldn’t tell was from blue or gray eyes beneath the pole light, but either way, it was oddly mesmerizing. She couldn’t bring herself to break free of it, although it somehow made her feel exposed.
  Naked.
Why was he looking at her like that—like he knew her? She’d never seen the man before. She certainly would have remembered those startling eyes and all that dark hair. Jesus, she liked a bit of mane on her men. Someone could slap him on the cover of a romance novel. Just wrap him in tartan, hand him a sword, and set up an unobtainable fantasy for a few thousand women.
She pursed her lips, considering him. Nah, she’d read probably a hundred thrift store romance novels in the past year, and this guy was too tan to be a Scotsman and not dark enough to be a sheikh. Greek tycoon, maybe? Oh yeah. Put him on the deck of a yacht wearing some of those little European swim trunks and—
“Isn’t it?” he repeated, and raised one dark eyebrow.
“Huh?” She blinked. Did he want something?
He shifted his weight and shoved his hands into the pockets of his leather jacket, grinning at her. Shit, he could have lit up the entire parking lot with that smile. He was so pretty—now, what did he want with her? Whatever it was, she wasn’t paying for it.
She closed her eyes and drew in a bolstering breath. “It’s cold,” she said blandly and hauled her toolbox up into her truck cab.
“Montana’s a pretty inhospitable place, huh? There’s still a month until winter, but I don’t think the snow cares about timeliness.”
“Mm-hmm.” She patted her pockets in search of her keys. The next thing he’d probably say was that he could make it a lot more hospitable for her, if she had enough cash.
Prostitutes were pretty predictable, and she certainly got propositioned enough, though usually the truck stop hos were a little less—upright.
But, shit, did she really look like the kind of woman who’d pay a man for sex? She wrapped her fingers around the handle, prepared to slam the door.
He moved closer and grabbed the door’s edge before she could pull it. “Hey, why don’t you let me buy you a cup of coffee? You look like you could use a cup.”
  “I don’t think so, dude.”
She could afford her own coffee, obviously, but no prostitute had ever offered to buy her anything. Must have been a new sales strategy—the hook ’em, then hump ’em.
She just wanted to get back on the road, but he was right. She did need to refill her thermos, fiend that she was. Coffee was her one vice, and she’d forgotten to take the canister into the restaurant with her during dinner. She didn’t want to give the guy the satisfaction, though, no matter how good he looked.
She let her gaze fall on him once again. He looked harmless enough, with his easy stance and hands jammed into the pockets of his coat. His boots were actually quite good quality. Brown leather with some scuffs. Broken in, and wet from snow, but they looked damned expensive. Didn’t seem like hand-me-downs, either. The heels were too good.
There must have been good money in truck stop whoring.
“No, thank you,” she finally managed, and gripped the door handle again after two failed attempts. “I-I need to get back on the road and get this load delivered.”
“Must be lonely,” he said. His grin waned slowly, and this time it was he who looked away, toward a truck entering the lot. He waited until it had circled around to the gas pumps.
“It’s a job,” she said when he looked up again. Damn, those eyes. They were so sad, and for some reason, that made her a little sad, too.

Author Interview: Her Ghost Wears Kilts by Kathleen Shaputis

Her Ghost Wears Kilts
Kathleen Shaputis

Genre:  Paranormal Romance
Publisher:   Crimson Romance
Date of Publication:  August 26, 2013

About the Book:
Something's not right at Baillie's popular used bookstore in rain-soaked western Washington and frigid, heart-stopping air is her first clue. When the cat refuses to enter the shop and Baillie hears faint bagpipes in the travel book section, her nerves are rubbed raw.
Meanwhile in Scotland, the heir of a local castle falls to a suspicious death. An evil banker claims ownership of the castle, leaving the staff to ponder their fate.
How are these events connected? The answer lies in a Ghost and Mrs. Muir tale, twenty-first century style that flips the table with a ghostly twenty-seven-year-old hunk, Lord Kai, and fifty-something bachelorette Baillie. Her gay best friend Gillian Nation and his girls dash to Scotland to Baillie's rescue when the combination of alcohol, villainous banker, Dna, and good old-fashioned jealousy throw Baillie into the fight of her life. Will she choose to reclaim her normal Northwest existence or grab onto an unorthodox love that makes life magical and breath-taking?

Author Interview:

Welcome, Kathleen, we are delighted to have you with us today, to share a little bit about yourself and your writing. Where are you from and from where/who did your love for writing come from?

I moved up from southern California to the great Pacific Northwest in 2000 and am now nestled in the county area of Olympia on two wooded acres. Yes, I have my own little forest. My love of writing sprang from a deep passion very young for reading, turning pages tucked in the corner of the couch or bed. I found if I wasn’t reading, my imagination took me on adventures even more incredible with characters of all kinds surrounding me. As an adult I found my maternal aunt and grandmother also had the same magical draw to books, so it’s in the genes.

Can you say that your journey to publication was difficult? If so, what were the hardest
moments to get through?

This book took a strange twist to publication. It’s intended audience was more “Sleepless in Seattle” type, light romantic comedy with a ghost. But after a few rejection slips, a dear friend who had been published with Crimson Romance, a new division of Adam Media, strongly suggested I submit the manuscript to them. From my query letter and synopsis, I got back a list of changes needed before they would consider taking the book. Mainly it was drop the more chick-lit scenes and bump up the relationship between the two main characters. I did and they accepted.

How do you overcome I-suck-at this, that little voice in your head that tells you your writing
isn’t good enough?

Great question! All writers fight the invisible editor on the shoulder constantly critiquing and side swiping your confidence. Over the years I’ve learned to ignore and drown her out with background music. Doesn’t mean she’s gone and zeroes in for attacks still, but I “have” to write. And if I give the characters an open door, they will take over for the most part so it doesn’t seem like my work, but theirs.

What is your dream vacation?

A relaxing, comfortable spot – whether on the beaches of northern California or a cute cottage in the forests, where nature is louder than humans.

Describe your writing style in five words.

Sassy, light-hearted romps with characters.

What movies are you currently excited to see?

“Into the Woods” coming out in 2014! I love fairy tales and this one includes Johnnie Depp and Meryl Streep. Muscials and romantic comedies are my favs – and I believe Mr. Depp will be singing in this one as well.

What are you currently reading?

“The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott” by Kelly O’Conner McNees

If you weren’t a writer, what other careers would you pursue?

Ah, now you have to remember this was back in the Sixties, after my childhood dreams of being a playwright and novelist had been buried by very practical parents, I wanted to be a guide dog dog trainer. I saw a show about the first guide dog, Buddy, and knew working with dogs and people would be perfect for me. I wrote to a guide dog school in San Rafael, California asking what I needed to take in college to be one. I was politely informed that only men were selected to become trainers. I still have the letter to this day. I went into clerical work until computers came along.

If you could create a holiday of your own, what would it be called?

I actually did this when I wrote “The Crowded Nest Syndrome,” a humorous look at the return of adult children in 2004 and created Crowded Nest Syndrome Awareness Day on June 12 gotten a lot of air time across the nation over the years, listed in the Chase book of Special Days. But it wasn’t really for me.

For people who haven’t read your novel, how would you summarize the plot?

Inspired by the 1939 movie “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir,” this romantic comedy is a contemporary adventure involving a fifty-something woman who is haunted by a gorgeous Scottish ghost trying to warn her of danger. A cast of characters come to Baillie’s rescue when she does indeed find her life in danger.

What are two of your pet-peeves?

Waiting for people to show up at a promised time and there’s no contact is worse than fingernails on a chalkboard. I hate to be late – which is not an easy thing when you live with a family of procrastinators.

To you, what makes a good story?

A good story wraps its tentacles around believable, three-dimensional characters. Doesn’t matter if they are a dog, a vampire or a house – the characters will make a book great.

What usually turns you off about a story?

Dry, on-going details that seem to drag into multiple paragraphs. I don’t mind a thousand page book if I’m engaged in the characters and storyline. But if it’s dry, sixty pages is too much.

If you could collaborate with any author, who would you choose, and why?

Before she passed away, it would have been Nora Ephron. The woman’s talent with words and humor traveled fairly similar to mine. My bucket list includes having one of my books made into a movie and that would have been ensured working with the likes of Ms. Ephron.

What is on your night stand?

Hmm, one, two, three stacks of books surrounding this poor table lamp. With another stack of
books on the floor against the front of the night stand. And there’s a Kindle on top of one of the
stacks.

What is your favorite book?

Is there such a thing as “a” favorite? That would be like saying you have a favorite child (slapping hands to my cheeks). Those that I read over and over are the Harry Potter series (JK Rowlings), Twilight series (Stephanie Meyer) and The Outlander series (Diana Gabaldon).

Thank you so much for joining us, Kathleen.
