Betweem the Tales, the Adelheid .5 Stories--Or, How Readers Affect Writers

by Mia Darien
If you look at my website and see the list of stories for Adelheid, there are two stories with a ".5" attached to them. These are short stories set between the novels in the series, and they are character stories. The plots are not meant to be intricate mysteries or complex plots, but views into characters in the series.

The plan now is to write one short story in between each novel, setting it on the novel's time line.

This has not always been my plan. A strange thing happened after I wrote "Cameron's Law" and sent it around to my beta readers and then released it, letting it go to readers and reviewers: people really liked Madison St John. She is a secondary, though frequent, character in "Cameron's Law" and the rest of the series, any time we see the Stanton Agency, because Sadie and Madison are best friends, roommates, and co-workers.

One of my beta readers asked when Madison was getting her own book, and a reviewer said they really liked her and wanted to see more of her.

The problem was that I had never planned a Madison book! I liked her and writing her too, but as she's a secretary, it never occurred to me. But now I had readers asking after her, and I'm the type of writer who likes to try to give my readers what they want. So, I sat down and thought it out.

This was when I wrote "Cats & Dogs," written from Madison's Point of View, giving her some romance and excitement. I chose to make it a special exclusive for people who signed up for my mailing list. Still, I had no plans to write any more. It was going to be a one off. I finished and released it after the second book in the series.

The second book was "When Forever Died" and was narrated by Dakota. It was well received, but then a reviewer said they wanted to know more about what happened after the story and with the character of Edward. And in my head, Dakota decided that she wasn't done with me. She did, at least, give me some time to work on the third book in the series, but then another short story was demanded, and so "Family Matters" came along to be released between books three and four.
During this time, other characters started chiming in on the idea. Characters who are too impatient to wait for their next book, or secondary characters who aren't planned to have their own books but still want to chime in.

So despite never having planned these short stories to be a recurring thing, it looks like even more of my characters are far from done with me...

Book Description:

Welcome to Adelheid, CT. Freak central. Unofficial capital of legal preternatural creatures in the Northeast. Focal point for anti-preternatural sentiments in the United States.

Who would ever guess that this otherwise sleepy New England town houses many of the most powerful beings known to exist?

* * *

In "Cameron's Law," meet Sadie Stanton, vampire poster girl for preternatural rights. She's just trying to start a business to help the community, but when vampires and werewolves start attacking each other, she gets thrust in the middle.

In "When Forever Died," Dakota is a rare shifter and hunter who has lived a long, hard life. But the past never sleeps and two simultaneous cases are going to test the personal defenses she's built over the centuries.

In "Voracious," the life D wants isn't what it seems. He certainly never planned on the fangs, but he's going to need a lot more than the pointy teeth to survive the first weeks of his new existence.
