The Love of a Good Vampiress… by Marie Treanor

We all know what the love of a good woman is reputed to do for otherwise bad men. And actually, it’s done quite a lot for me, recently! In the sense of my story, I should explain J.

So my newest release, BLOOD DESCENT is the third book in the Blood Hunters series, and features as its hero the powerful and stubborn Konrad, leader of the three person team of vampire hunters who first appeared in BLOOD ON SILK (first of the Awakened by Blood trilogy which precedes Blood Hunters. Confused? Don’t be, it’s all on my website www.MarieTreanor.com J).

At first I confess I tried to avoid Konrad’s story - I found him the least accessible, even the least likeable of my hunters L. But then, quite suddenly, I discovered his love interest, and began to see the tortured man through her eyes, and I found I really did like him. A lot! I liked his toughness, his unchanging loyalties, even his driven, layered, nightmare-ridden nature. Konrad has strength in every sense of the word, but like his nemesis, the vampire overlord Saloman, he needs a woman to soften his edges J.

So who is this woman who showed me how to love Konrad as he should be loved? She’s a young, Glaswegian vampire called Maggie who, in fact, made her first brief appearance in BLOOD ETERNAL (third of the Awakened by Blood trilogy), when she accosted war-wounded soldier John Ramsay in Sauchiehall Street one Friday night. Although her scene was short, and she didn’t even have a name then, she was a character I wanted to revisit one day – and then it came to me with blinding clarity what an excellent foil she was for Konrad.

In many ways, she’s his complete opposite. She takes care of her appearance, is naturally polite and incurably friendly. She’s curious about everyone, enjoys human company and the sugar-filled blood she finds in cinemas J. I see her as a little bit like a Scottish Marlene Dietrich – all 40s film star glamour with a healthy dose of humorous Glaswegian realism. She accepts what she is, and is quite unapologetic about her vampire habits. And yet in many ways, she shows much more humanity than Konrad. She causes him to question beliefs he’s never doubted for a moment, just by being who she is.

Although my story is fantasy, I like to think this interaction and adjustment between couples isn’t so unusual. What do you think? I’ll give away an e-copy of BLOOD GUILT, the first of the Blood Hunters series, to one commenter J.

A child is born...into the final showdown of Vampire and Hunter

The face of a killer, the heart of a lost child…

Konrad once led the legendary first team of Hungarian vampire hunters. Now, refusing to ally with the undead, he goes his own way, slaughtering vampires across the length and breadth of Europe.

The dying thoughts of one such vampire send Konrad to Britain in search of a dangerous instrument that  might be just what he needs in his obsessive war with undead overlord Saloman – a war he’s determined to win at any cost. The only being who can lead him to the instrument and its current, evil possessor, is sexy, mysterious, young Glaswegian vampire Maggie, who holds herself aloof from her own kind.

Maggie sees much more than Konrad’s anger and cruelty. She makes it her mission to reach beyond the horrors of his past and find the man he should have been. Difficult, when he threatens her heart as well as everything she believes in; and when her whole being clamors for his body and his blood.

While journalists circle, about to break the news of vampire existence on mainstream television, Elizabeth Silk labors to give birth to Saloman’s daughter: and Maggie plays a dangerous game that risks everyone for her belief in one troubled man.
